Defending driving champion Chas Okerson of Freehold and Chad Churilla of St. James, N.Y. celebrated victories in Twin 35 lap Downs Ford Modified feature races at Wall Stadium Speedway Saturday night. Okerson’s Memorial Day weekend win was his 16th in the Modified division while Churilla’s was his very first.
In the first 35-lapper Okerson took advantage of a top seven inverted draw after time trials to start on the front row. Okerson rocketed to the lead immediately while Justin Gumley of Howell was his first contender. On the 14th lap Howell’s Eric Mauriello moved into second and chased Okerson through a handful of restarts before settling for second. Brick’s Ron Frees was a constant contender before finishing third with Trevor Alspach of Willingboro and Jackson’s Steven Reed completing the top five.
In the second Modified race Churilla jumped to the lead at the outset. Just a few cautions slowed the pace as Adam LaCicero of Lavallette became the contender and followed Churilla most of the way while Gumley ran third. As the laps wore the battle for second got more intense with Gumley stealing away the runner-up spot at the very end. Jonathan Mandato of Toms River and New Egypt’s Jason Hearne were fourth and fifth.
Joe Mongeau of Brick took the lead on the seventh lap and raced on to win the 25-lap companion race for the O’Shea’s Auto Repair Factory Stocks. Union’s Joey Helberg and Manchester’s Scott Riggleman were a tight second and third while Marty Van Druten of Toms River and Rich Mongeau of Brick completed the top five.
Jason Lane of Brick won his first ever 25-lapper for the Green Monster Insulation 4 Cylinder Stocks over Alonzo Morales of Burlington who closed in during the final laps. Brien Crosby and Allan Camp, both of Wall, were third and fourth and Howell’s Darren Burdge was fifth.
Howie Conk, Jr. of Jackson won his second straight main event for the Elite Maintenance Limited Late Models. Anthony Crimaldi of Port Monmouth overcame a couple of accidents to grab second in the closing laps while Brian Doyle of Ronkonkoma, N.Y. was third. Jackson’s Glen Conk and Ronnie Mullen of Brick wrapped up the top five.
Wall Stadium returns to action this Saturday (May 30) with a gigantic celebration of the 65th Anniversary of the speedway’s opening. On the track the Modifieds, Sportsman and Factory Stock cars will compete in 65 lap feature races while the Limited Late Models will compete in their first Triple Crown race. The 4 Cylinder Stocks and the Green Flag Driving Experience Legend Cars are also set for action. In addition the restored racecars of the Garden State Vintage stock car club will be on display and the winner of the first ever Wall Stadium race, the legendary Frankie Schneider, will be on hand to meet with fans. Other popular racers from the 1950 season, Ronnie Kohler and Dick Davis, will also be on hand.
In addition radio station New Jersey 101.5 will broadcast live from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Miss New Jersey and Miss Motorsports will be guests at the track.
With spectator seating opening at 5:00 p.m. qualifying is set for 6:00 p.m. followed by main events.
Wall Stadium presents professional motorsports events on Saturdays and Sundays through September with special post-season races in October and November. The speedway is located on Route 34 in Wall Township, N.J., just one mile north of Garden State Parkway exit 98 and Interstate 195 exit 35B.
