MANCUSO, SHARPE, WOCH COLLECT FEATURE WINS

One week ago Andy Jankowiak of Tonawanda, N.Y. loaded up his Modified and headed down south to Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Over the course of two days Jankowiak picked up a pair of top ten finishes at the challenging 1/4-mile track known as the “Madhouse”.

Fast forward to Saturday night as Jankowiak returned to his “house”, Lancaster National Speedway & Dragway, where he was able to find the friendly confines of victory lane once again.

Jankowiak arrived to the track late as his team scrambled to prepare his Sportsman after his Friday night racing plans were rained out. He missed the heat races, and had to start last in the 30-lap feature with just eight laps on the redone asphalt racing surface.

Sherri Hogan and John Barber led the Sportsman field to the initial green flag as Jankowiak began his march to the front. Barber grabbed the early lead as Hogan settled into second.

One other car that was moving through the field was Mike Ramos of Glenfield, N.Y. Ramos was making his Sportsman debut at Lancaster after moving up from the Big 10 Super Stocks. Ramos, who has previously won at Lancaster in a Super Stock, made the nearly four hour trip from homee to compete with the Sportsman. The ride to Western New York was not a smooth one as his trailer blew three tires while on route to the track.

Ramos started eighth, but was up to second place by lap six. Shortly after she was passed by Ramos for second, Sherri Hogan lost the motor in her car, and it dumped oil all over turn three.

Barber led Ramos and Jankowiak back to the green flag following the lengthy clean up. Jankowiak eventually moved up to second on lap eight, and then set his sights on Barber.

The yellow flag flew again on lap 17 when Bobby Lippa, Jr. stopped in turn two. On the ensuing restart Jankowiak drove from the outside of the front row to take the lead from Barber. Barber kept close tabs on Jankowiak for a few laps, but eventually lost ground as the race wore on.

Jankowiak picked up his first feature win of the season at Lancaster. Barber finished second, and Ramos wound up third. Street Stock graduates, Jake Lyon and TJ Cochrane, rounded out the top five.

The Big 10 Super Stock Series made their first visit of the season to Lancaster. Joe Mancso of Buffalo picked up the win as he held off Jake Wylie. Wylie gave up the lead to Mancuso on lap 11 when pushed up the race track in turn three. He chased Macuso for the final 14 laps trying make up for his mistake, but had to settle for second. Jake Lyon finished third. Pennsylvania teammates, Robert Fink and Aaron Higgins, completed the top five.

Rich Sharpe of Lancaster, NY kept his hot streak alive in the Street Stocks as he earned his third-straight win, dating back to last year’s season-ending U.S. Open. Sharpe survived a strong challenge from Keith Flanigan during the final few laps. Flanigan made several attempts to get under Sharpe, including one using the grass in turn two, but could not take over first place.

Bobby Woch of Alden, NY led 19 of 20 laps to win the 4-Cylinder feature. Pole sitter Rich Bartel led the opening lap, but then surrendered the lead to Woch on the second circuit. Woch drove away from the field to win by a straightaway over Al Piasecki and Bartel.

The Seneca Resorts & Casinos Saturday Night Stock Car program resumes at Lancaster in June 20 with autograph night. Race fans will get to meet their favorite drivers during an on-track autograph session. All four weekly divisions will be in action. Racing starts at 6:30 PM.

Lancaster will be invaded by the Race of Champions Modified Tour on Thursday, June 25 for Ol’ Boy Cup 60 presented by Thermal Foams. All the stars of RoC Tour will be on hand for this special mid-week event. The Big 10 Super Stocks and 4-Cylinder will also compete that night.
