”I’m out of breath,” stated NASCAR Sunoco Modified feature winner Mike Leaty last Friday. “That was a hard fought battle tonight with Kevin (Timmerman). When you come here you know he is the guy to beat. His team prepares a good car, as does my crew.”

Timmy Catalano returned to the Auto Value Scorpion victory lane for the fourth week in a row, remaining undefeated in 2015 at Spencer Speedway.

Brian Hallett won the Super Six 20-lap feature, while Rob Whipple from Penneville, NY won the Mid-State Vintage race.

“My home track is Fulton, but I do really well at this place, making it my favorite,” commented Whipple.

The 35-lap Sunoco Modified feature was green flagged with Matt lees grabbing the early lead. On the second lap the yellow flew when Tim Lewis Jr. slide off the super fast half mile in the fourth turn. The restart saw lees maintain his advantage over Andy Lewis, Kevin Timmerman and Mike Leaty.

On lap eight, leaders Lees and Lewis came together entering the third turn and spun causing the yellow to fly again. With Timmerman and Leaty pacing the restart, Leaty blasted into the lead from his outside restart position.

From this point on Timmerman pressured Leaty the remaining distance never getting off his rear bumper. Back in the field Andy Jankowiak had moved into third and would find himself in a battle to maintain the position.

The final yellow flew on lap 19, when the air cleaner unit from Amy Catalano’s car flew off in the second turn.

That restart saw Jankowiak fall back to fifth behind both Andy and Daryl Lewis. The finish would remain the same with Leaty taking the win over Timmerman Andy Lewis, Daryl Lewis and Jankowiak.

The 20-lap Super Six feature saw some excellent side-by-side racing. Bill Malin led the opening lap only to lose the led to Van Grant. Grant then lost the lead to Brian Hallett on a lap five restart.

The final yellow flew on lap 13 for a spin in the third turn by fourth place runner, Josh Schoonmaker. Hallett was able to hold off Josh’s daughter Ashley Schoonmaker to take the win. Ashley came home a close second followed by Grant, Tim Faro and Brandon Allen.

The 15-lap Four Cylinder Scorpion feature had to be red flagged on the third lap when both Austin Montgomery and Shaun Frarey came together in the fourth turn with Frarey’s car slamming into the outside wall foam block. He was uninjured but his car was badly damaged.

The restart saw Beth Dennie challenge leader Tom Alloco for the lead. Alloco would prevail. Back in the back Timmy Catalano, who has won every Scorpion race run this year at Spencer was working his way up to second. He then was able to pass Alloco on lap 11 and go on to take the feature win. Alloco fell back to fourth behind Donnie Knapp Jr. and Dennie. Mike Hyman came home fifth.

When asked what the easy part of racing was Catalano replied, “Its all easy, you just cannot force anything.”

A special appearance by the Mid-State Vintage cars saw the racers run a 15-lap feature. Up front a real battle was forming between heat winner Tim Janes in his number 50 ’37 Chevy Coupe and Ron Schadt in an Olson small block Chevy.

On lap five Janes car seemed to be developing a mechanical issue when Schadt passed him for the lead. On lap eight, Jane coasted off the back stretch and came to a stop to bring out the yellow, just as Rob Whipple took the lead from Schadt.

The restart saw Whipple hold onto the front spot and go on to the take the checkered flag. Schadt finished second followed by Jon Alford in a full bodied Ford Torino late model. Tom Guiler came home in fourth in a Pinto bodied modified small block. Rounding out the top five was Shirley Morden in her ’36 Chevy Sedan.

Please note there will be no NASCAR Racing at Spencer on Friday, July 3th. A special drag racing event, the Douglis Fletcher Memorial, will be staged at Spencer on Saturday, July 4th at noon.
