Anthony Sesely raced in contention most of the way to put himself in a position to win in the closing laps and then took the victory in the final moments of the 41st running of the Garden State Classic at Wall Stadium Speedway Saturday night. The 100-lap Downs Ford Modified win was the Matawan veteran’s second victory in the prestigious event.

Once the 29 entries were trimmed down to 24 starters Derek Hopkinson of Toms River rocketed to the lead with Holmdel’s Andrew Krause on his bumper. The first 66 laps went pretty smoothly with just a few caution flags for relatively minor incidents. A lap 66 restart saw Krause power to the lead with former race winners Steven Reed of Freehold and Trevor Alspach of Willingboro advancing to second and third

Lap 78 saw Reed charge into the lead with Alspach and Zane Zeiner of Bath, Pa. taking over second and third. Alspach powered to the front on the 83rd lap before Zeiner took command on a lap 89 restart while Sesely slipped into second with Howell’s Jimmy Blewett charging into third.

Sesely then hounded Zeiner until a caution flag waved on lap 98. On the ensuing restart officials felt that Zeiner jumped at the restart line and warned him that he one attempt to get it right. When the restart flag waved again officials felt that Zeiner jumped again and sent him to the rear of the field.

That put Sesely to the top spot and he raced home the final two laps for the win Blewett was second, with Manchester’s Shanon Mongeau, Freehold’s Chas Okerson and Shaun Carrig of Little Falls rounding out the top five.

“The car was real good tonight, but sometimes you need luck and tonight I needed the luck,” Sesely said. “It was real hot out there tonight and I needed the car to be good. We had a couple of oil downs on the track and it was pretty tough sitting in that hot car while the track crew cleaned the track.

“The track was pretty slick after that but the track crew did a good job.”

Brick’s Ronnie Mullen grabbed the win in the companion 25-lapper for the O’Shea’s Auto Repair Factory Stocks fighting off both Brick’s Joe Mongeau and Union’s Joey Helberg. Scott Riggleman of Manchester and Wall’s Bob Haberstick completed the top five.

Kevin Nowak of Medford, N.Y. raced into the top spot on lap 13 and drove to victory in the 25-lap race for the Green Flag Driving Experience Legend Cars. Vinny Troia, early leader Robert French, Nick Van Wickle and Chris Gall completed the top five.

John Vullo of Ronkonkoma, N.Y. won the Elite Maintenance Limited Late Model 25-lapper over Holmdel’s Dominic Casola. Wall’s Cole Ormsbee, Anthony Crimaldi of Port Monmouth and Bayville’s Mike Tillett were third through fifth.

Alonzo Morales of Burling won his second straight 25-lapper for the Green Monster Insulation 4 Cylinder Stocks over Jason Lane and Ronnie Mullen, both of Brick. TJ Graves and Darianne McLaren wrapped up the top five.

The main event for the Snap-on Sportsman racers was postponed until this Saturday.

Wall Stadium returns to action this Saturday (July 18) for Snap-on Night with the Downs Ford Modified stock cars in action along with two main events for the Sportsman cars.
