Downs Ford Modified stock car driver Steven Reed has always raced for victories while letting the championship point race take care of itself. On Saturday night at Wall Stadium Speedway the Jackson resident won the final 50-lap “Triple Crown” race and that was good enough for him to win the mini-series title and the $1,200 in bonus money that went with it. The “Snap-on Night” victory was Reed’s third win of the season and also earned him a watch from Mertens Jewelers of Manasquan.

Reed powered his No. 55 out front at the drop of the green flag and was never headed. Holmdel’s Justin Gumley, Howell’s Eric Mauriello and Adam LaCicero of Lavallette all took turns at attacking the race leader before the checker flag waved.

At the finish it was Reed, LaCicero and Mauriello while Brick’s Ron Frees was fourth and Zack Alspach of Willingboro was fifth. Little Falls’ Shaun Carrig was ninth and won a special award from the Wiesnewski family in honor of their late son Victor.

“I’m just glad I’m a better driver than I am a bull rider,” Reed said jokingly after taking a fall from a mechanical bull in the grandstand midway earlier in the evening. “We work real hard on the car every week whether we win or not. We look for every tenth of a second and that work paid off tonight.”

The Snap-on Sportsman cars ran two main events. In the 40-lapper, the second of three “Triple Crown” races, Andrew Krause of Holmdel took the lead on lap 12 and was never headed. Manchester’s Shanon Mongeau, Howell’s Kevin Davison, Rob Hyer of South Amboy and Howell’s Chris Lane were second through fifth.

Larry Thompson of Parlin won the second Sportsman main on his sponsor’s night followed by Krause, Tuckerton’s Robbie Walton, Davison and Mongeau.

Brick’s Ronnie Mullen won the first of two feature races for the O’Shea’s Auto Repair Factory Stocks over Union’s Joey Helberg, Scott Riggleman of Manchester, Joe Mongeau of Brick and Toms River’s Marty Van Druten. In the second race Mongeau made a late race pass for the win over Helberg, Ron Booth, Wall’s Tiffany Olejnik and Gerry Koenig.

Howell’s Darren Burdge grabbed the win in the 25-lapper for the Green Monster Insulation 4 Cylinder Stocks while Brick’s Ronnie Mullen was the runner-up. Lavallette’s Christian LaCicero, Wall’s TJ Graves and Brick’s Jason Lane were second through fifth.

Buddy Sload won the 25-lapper for the TQ Midgets. The race was the first one ever held on the flat fifth mile “inner oval” for the open cockpit cars.

Wall Stadium returns to action this Saturday (July 25) for the “Halfway the Christmas Party Night” with the Modified stock cars in action along with Sportsman cars, the Factory Stocks, the Elite Maintenance Limited Late Models, the Green Flag Driving Experience Legend Cars and the 4 Cylinder Stocks. With spectator seating opening at 5:00 p.m. qualifying is set for 6:00 p.m. followed by main events.

Wall Stadium presents professional motorsports events on Saturdays and Sundays through September with special post-season races in October and November.
