PENNELL, SHARPE & LALOMIA JR. SCORE “CHRISTMAS IN JULY” WINS AT LANCASTER
Fans donate 200 toys for Toys for Tots collection drive

With five months until the big day, Lancaster National Speedway & Dragway hosted “Christmas in July” night on Saturday for the Seneca Resorts & Casinos Stock Car program. Fans that attended were encouraged to donate a new, unwrapped toy as part of a United States Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots drive. A total of 200 toys were collected in the spirit of the event.

The Street Stocks ran their annual Tom “Golden Wheel” Agen Memorial race in honor of 23-time feature winner, Tom Agen, Sr., who passed away suddenly in 2010. Rich Sharpe of Lancaster cruised to the 25-lap feature win after passing pole sitter, Jerome Hruby, for the lead on lap five. Sharpe is undefeated in Street Stock competition this season at Lancaster with three wins in three races.

Former Super Stock track champion, Jay Mudra, finished second in the Cochrane Motorsports #76. Dennis Londos, Jerome Hruby and Keith Flanigan rounded out the top five.

Mark Pennell of Lancaster bested a season-high field of 19 cars to capture his first Sportsman win of the season. Pennell led all 30 laps in the Thompson Racing #54, but had to sustain several challenges for the lead to earn the victory.

Pennell fended off Sherri Hogan through several early race restarts during the first half of the race, and then held off Jake Lyon later on in the event to secure the win.

Lyon faded late in the race and eventually handed over second place to Neal Dietz, Jr. who was making his first appearance of the season at Lancaster in the Paul Graff-owned #44. Bobby Hanel, Jr. finished third behind the wheel of the Jankowiak Racing #57. Hanel is a former multi-time feature winner in the Street Stocks, and had not been behind the wheel of a race car in several seasons.

Tom Lalomia, Jr. won the 20-lap 4-Cylinder feature for his first win of the season. Lalomia inherited the top spot on lap 17 when Rich Bartel developed a flat right front tire while leading

Pole sitter, Dave Anasiewicz, led the first 15 laps of the race before Bartel got by him on the inside of the turn three.

A late race caution put veteran Al Piasecki in position to challenge Lalomia for the win, but he had to settle for second. Joe Brunka, Garrett Cleversley and Chris Pennell rounded out the top five.

Stock car racing returns to Lancaster on August 8 with the second race of the year for the X-Press Signs Late Models. The Sportsman, Street Stocks and 4-Cylinder will also be in action. Racing begins at 6:30 PM.
