Former Wall Stadium Speedway Street Stock driving champion Ron Frees raced to his first victory of the year in the Downs Ford Modified stock car main event Saturday night. It was the Brick resident’s first win since returning to the third-mile paved oval at the beginning of the season, his second in the Modified class and his 29th overall at the speedway.

Trevor Alspach of Willingboro was looking to turn around his luckless season by taking the lead early in the 40-lap race and soon found Frees riding close behind. With just a few cautions slowing the 23-car field lapped traffic soon came into play. Just passing the halfway point of the race one lapped car continued to race in front of the leader. Alspach and the lapped car tangled on the front stretch on lap 25 with Frees taking over the top spot as a result.

Frees then fought off the attacks of Howell’s Eric Mauriello in the closing laps for the win while Chas Okerson of Freehold was third. Derek Hopkinson of Toms River was charging at the end as he overcame early trouble for fourth. Trevor Alspach also made a striking recovery for fifth.

“I have to thank everyone with Yaccarino Motorsports for this opportunity,” Frees said after completing a backwards victory lap. “The car was good, but I’m afraid I held up the 14 car a little at the end. Still, you get that close to a win and you just can’t give it away.”

Larry Thompson of Parlin took his second straight win in the 30-lapper for the Snap-on Sportsman cars grabbing the lead on a lap 20 with an inside lane pass of Wall’s Rob Silver. Howell’s Kevin Davison was the runner-up, with Matt Langbein of Laurence Harbor, Holmdel’s Andrew Krause and Manasquan’s Kenny Van Wickle wrapping up the top five.

Many time champion Rick Mongeau proved that he is still no stranger to winning by taking top honors in the 25-lapper for the O’Shea’s Auto Repair Factory Stocks. Ronnie Mullen of Brick was the runner-up, while Union’s Joey Helberg, Marty Van Druten of Toms River and Brick’s Joe Mongeau were third through fifth.

Wall’s Robert French continues his quest for his first Green Flag Driving Experience Legend Cars title by winning his third 25-lapper of the season. Brian Spencer of Edison was tight in second spot, with Nick Van Wickle, Vinnie Colletti and Chris Gall completing the top five.

Jason Lane of Brick charged to the lead quickly and then held his ground for his second win of the year in the Green Monster Insulation 4 Cylinder Stocks 25-lapper. Brick’s Ronnie Mullen was second, with Fred Cannock, TJ Graves of Wall and Burlington’s Alonzo Morales rounding out the top five.

Defending champ Brian Doyle of Ronkonkoma, N.Y. grabbed the lead from Wall’s Cole Ormsbee in the late going to win the Elite Maintenance Limited Late Model 25-lap main event. Point leader Anthony Crimaldi was third with Beachwood’s Bill Vanderveen fourth and Dominic Casola of Holmdel fifth.

Wall Stadium returns to action this Saturday (August 1) for the “Summer Scorcher” with the Modified stock cars featured in a 125-lap, $5000 to win main event. Factory Stocks, Limited Late Models and the 4 Cylinder Stocks will also be on the card. With spectator seating opening at 5:00 p.m. qualifying is set for 5:30 p.m. followed by main events.

Wall Stadium presents professional motorsports events on Saturdays and Sundays through September with special post-season races in October and November. The speedway is located on Route 34 in Wall Township, N.J., just one mile north of Garden State Parkway exit 98 and Interstate 195 exit 35B.
