TREVOR ALSPACH POCKETS $5000 FOR MODIFIED “SCORCHER” WIN AT WALL STADIUM SATURDAY

Trevor Alspach turned around what had been a disappointing season by winning the 125-lap “Summer Scorcher” for Downs Ford Modified stock cars at Wall Stadium Speedway Saturday night. The $5000 win was the first of the season for the Willingboro resident.

Holmdel’s Andrew Krause posted fast time in qualifying and jumped to the lead from the pole position with Alspach slipping into the runner-up spot and Holmdel’s Justin Gumley running third. As the contest ran through the opening 89 non-stop laps Alspach would occasionally move to Krause’s bumper before sliding back a few car lengths. As the race neared halfway Howell’s Jimmy Blewett and Jackson’s Steven Reed advanced to third and fourth as Gumley slipped to fifth spot.

The first of just a few minor cautions waved on lap 89 when New Egypt’s Jason Hearne spun in the second corner. During this caution every one of the competitors in the race stopped for two new tires for the 36-lap sprint to the finish.

Once back to action Krause, Alspach and Blewett wrestled for the top spot and swapped positions often through a flurry of caution flags. Alspach was finally able to take the lead for good on lap 94 and stretched an advantage to the finish. Blewett settled for second while Eric Mauriello of Howell came from deep in the field to cross the line third. Mauriello’s car then failed post race inspection, which handed third spot to Reed. Krause finished fourth and Matawan’s Anthony Sesely was fifth.

“The car was real good tonight thanks to Rob Ormsbee and my family,” Alspach said. “We really needed this win. We’ve been in a spot to win a couple other times this year but something bad always happened.

“Tonight I just tried to stay in contention until the end. We came up with a good pair of tires and the car worked perfectly.”

Scott Riggleman of Manchester won the companion 25-lapper for the O’Shea’s Auto Repair Factory Stocks taking the lead on lap 16. Marty Van Druten of Toms River, Howell’s Rich Mongeau, Wall’s Bob Haberstick and Brick’s Ronnie Mullen were second through fifth.

Cole Ormsbee of Wall won his first ever 25-lapper for the Elite Maintenance Limited late Models leading the non-stop test from start to finish. Jackson’s Howie Conk and point leader Anthony Crimaldi of Port Monmouth were second and third, with Mike Tillett of Bayville and Brian Doyle of Ronkonkoma, N.Y. fourth and fifth.

Howell’s Darren Burdge won his second 25-lapper for the Green Monster Insulation 4 Cylinder Stocks over Brick’s Ronnie Mullen and Alonzo Morales of Burlington. Wall’s TJ Graves and Fred Cannock were fourth and fifth.

With clean racing in all divisions and never the need for the wrecker all evening the four-division racing card was completed before 9:00 p.m.

Wall Stadium returns to action this Saturday (August 8) for NAPA Night and First Responders Night action featuring the Modifieds, Sportsman, Factory Stocks, 4 Cylinder Stocks and the Green Flag Driving Experience Legend Cars.
