Hobby Stocks going extra distance; Sr. Champ Karts on Saturday race card

With a solid two months of racing to go at Mahoning Valley Speedway, title fights across all six track classes are heating up and the battle for those aiming at a coveted track championship continues on this coming Saturday evening, August 12.

In the Modified division the top five in points are made up of all former track champs led by Earl Paules. His lead is slim too as Austin Kochenash, is just four points back and comes into the night’s race as one of the hottest drivers overall with eight straight top fives including a win and three runner-ups. Nine points back is Don Wagner followed by Eric Beers who is 20 from first then defending champ and most recent winner Kris Graver who sits 41 behind.

Paul Koehler Jr., won for the sixth time a week ago and has led the Late Model points all season but keeping hot on his trail is Mike Sweeney who scored five wins and is only 28 markers behind. Also in proximity Frankie Althouse.

In the Street Stocks as usual it’s far too soon to even think about title hopefuls as top-15 are within 115 points from the top. Currently sitting number one is Zach Graver but by a mere two points over Randy Schlenker. In 14 features this far there has been 13 different winners.

Pro 4 point leader Cody Kohler has finished all but one race in the top five and that was a sixth place last week, however, veteran Bobby Kibler Sr., ’14 champ Nick Baer and Bobby Kibler Jr., remain within striking distance.

At the beginning of the season Ricky Yetter proclaimed this to be his final year of racing and thus would settle for nothing less than a championship. So far he is holding up to that but heavy hitters Lorin Arthofer II, Jack Ely and Mike Stofflet and nipping at his heels.

The Hobby Stocks have seen the point lead flip-flop nearly each week and now it has become a duel between two brothers as Cody Geist is just above his older sibling Shayne Geist with just a 24 point separation.

The Geist brothers and the rest of the Hobby Stock class will have added incentive this week as special 35-lap, $400-to-win main event will be run.

Also in action are the Sr. Champ Karts who will be vying for a $500 first place prize with a full payout going to the entire starting field. The race is being presented by JPM Karting and Mahoning Valley Speedway.

At intermission there will be Kids Box Car Races. This is a fun-filled event that every youngster would enjoy getting in on. Rules for the Box Car Races can be found on the track’s Facebook page.

Adult general admission is $12. $2 off for students, seniors 65+ and active military. Must have ID. Children 10 years old and under are free. Regular warmups begin at 4:00 and racing starts at 6:00. Grandstands open at 4:00.

Additional news can be found on the track’s official site at www.mahoningvalley-speedway.com or on Facebook at Mahoning Valley Speedway and on Twitter at twitter.com/MahoningSpeed. Mahoning Valley Speedway is adjacent to the Mahoning Valley Farmers Market on PA Route 443 just a few miles west of Lehighton.
