After suffering through a terrible first half of the season that saw his car nearly destroyed on more than one occasion Derek Hopkinson raced to victory in the 40-lap main event for Downs Ford Modified stock cars at Wall Stadium Saturday night. It was the first win of the year for the Toms River resident and his second overall in the Modified division.

Jason Treat of Jackson was the early leader in the contest while Hopkinson quickly powered toward the front. By lap three Hopkinson advanced to second and dove into the low groove in turns three and four to take the lead. Hopkinson then stretched a comfortable advantage over New Egypt’s Jason Hearne through a long green flag period until the caution finally waved with three laps remaining. That yellow was forced by a spinning Hearne who suffered a broken rear axle.

Hopkinson then held off Howell’s Justin Gumley through a flurry of late race cautions before nailing down the win. Treat was third with Brick’s Ron Frees and Jackson’s Steven Reed wrapping up the top five.

“I sure didn’t want to see that caution late in the race,” Hopkinson said in the winner’s circle. “With all that has gone wrong this year I was worried that something else would go wrong. But the car was great and I have to thank everyone who works on it.

“With all our trouble this year they have gone beyond the call of duty.”

Mitchell Dowd of Pottstown, Pa. won the 40-lapper for the Green Flag Driving Experience Legend Cars grabbing the lead with an inside lane pass on the final lap. Defending champion Brian Spencer of Edison was second, with Nick Van Wickle, Casey Robicheau of Whiting and Ricky Collins wrapping up the top five.

Howie Conk of Jackson dove to the inside while racing in a group of lapped cars to take the lead and eventual win in the 25-lapper for the Elite Maintenance Limited Late Model cars. Defending champion Brian Doyle of Ronkonkoma, N.Y. was the runner-up, with Mike Tillett of Bayville, Wall’s Cole Ormsbee and Beachwood’s Bill Vanderveen securing the remaining top five spots.

After winning his career first Green Monster Insulation 4 Cylinder Stock main event the week before, Fred Cannock of Port Monmouth returned to the winner’s circle Saturday night. Cannock, Brick’s Ronnie Mullen and Wall’s TJ Graves were the tight top three at the line while Brick’s Jason Lane and James Meyers of Port Monmouth were fourth and fifth.

Louie Keraitis of Toms River won the 15-lapper for the visiting Microstocks.

Wall Stadium returns to action this Saturday (August 22) featuring the Modifieds in the “Woody’s High Banks 105,” a 105 lap main event offering $5,105 to the winner. The Snap-on Sportsman cars, O’Shea’s Auto Repair Factory Stocks, 4 Cylinder Stocks and the TQ Midgets will also be on the card. Spectator seating opens at 5:00 p.m. and qualifying is set for 5:30 p.m. followed by main events.
