It was a full night of racing under a full moon. In the NASCAR Sunoco Modifieds Tommy Catalano picked up his third feature win of the 2015 season at Spencer.

“It’s been a rough couple of weeks here at Spencer,” stated Catalano. “I was using everything I had to take this win.”

In the Auto Value Four Cylinder Scorpions, Mike Hyman won the first 15-lap feature and Timmy Catalano took top honors in the second 15-lapper.

The Super Six win was earned by Brian Hallett. It was only his second win of the year at Spencer, a track he has dominated in the past.

“We blew up two motors early in the season, and then broke a flywheel,” commented Hallett. “One good result was, after putting in that new flywheel, we have been running much better.”

The New York Super Stocks were on hand to make up for one week they were rained out. Tim Gullo picked up his second Spencer win of the season.

The 35-lap NASCAR Sunoco Modified main event saw the race run green-to-checkers without any yellows. Matt Lees grabbed the lead at the drop of the green. Bobby Lippa Jr. battled Lees for a short time, but began to fall back after being passed by Catalano.

On lap five, Catalano passed Lees for the lead and never looked back. Mike Leaty quickly took second and began to chase Catalano.

Back in the field, Daryl Lewis Jr. was on the charge. At the half way mark he took fourth from Kevin Timmerman. Two laps later Daryl and brother Andy came together in the second turn, resulting in Daryl moving up to third.

Up front Leaty made a number of stabs at the lead dropping low in the back stretch and pulling along side of Catalano. Each time Catalano held his line and powered out of turn four with the lead.

At the checkers it was Catalano followed, by inches, by Leaty. Daryl Lewis Jr. came home a solid third followed by Andy Lewis and Amy Catalano.

“That was some race“, added Catalano. “We had to run hard the whole distance.”

The NYS Super Stock 25-lap feature was full of action. Tim Gullo took the lead at the drop of the green only to be passed by Chris Vogler on a lap two restart following contact involved accident on the front stretch between Gary Noe and Bill Malin. Malin’s car ended up a top of Noe’s front end. Surprisingly Noe was able to continue.

On lap three Noe caused another yellow when, as he was charging back towards the front, he failed to complete a pass on Anthony Gullo’s 71x car, resulting in his number 1 car coming in contact with the back stretch wall in a shower of sparks. Noe returned to the pits and had his crew remove the front end sheet metal and returned to the race without losing a lap.

The restart saw Noe try the same move, only this time the right side of his car began to flap in the wind, resulting in his being black flagged back to the pits.

Up from Vogler was in a battle for the lead with Gullo, when Bill Frisbee Jr. joined the battle. Lap nine saw the red flag displayed as safety crews needed the entire track to remove the Tommy Catalano car, which had sailed through the infield backstretch grass and then spun in the third turn.

Vogler held the lead on the restart, but on the charge was Frisbee, now running second. Frisbee made his move down the backstretch on lap 12 to take the lead. Two laps later it was Gullo using the same move to pass Frisbee to retake the lead.

On lap 18, Frisbee lost the handle, spinning in the third turn. Anthony Gullo, running fourth, had no place to go but take to the wet grass. Gull’s car slid across the grass and came in contact with a tree off turn four, ending his race and causing the second red flag session of the race.

Tim Gullo remained the leader for the remainder of the race holding off Vogler, who finished second. Following Vogler were Billy Coyle, Mitchell Wright and Nate Peckham rounding out the top five finishers.

“My car was real loose at the start,” stated Gullo. “I changed the brake bias and things got a lot better. This was just a real fast, good race.”

The Super Six feature saw pole sitter Brian Hallett pull out into the lead and hold it the entire distance. Only one yellow slowed the race, coming on lap four when Bill Malin spun in the second turn.

Up front Josh Schoonmaker tried to chase down Hallett, but was never really able to get close enough to make a pass. Barrett Schenk made a last lap pass on Tim Faro to finished third. Van Grant completed the top five finishers.

Two Auto Value Four Cylinder Scorpion races took place. In the first feature Mike Hyman was able to pass Austin Montgomery on lap ten and sail home with his first feature win of the year. Multi-time feature winner Timmy Catalano finished in second. They were followed to the line by Shaun Frarey, Montgomery and Donnie Knapp Jr. This feature ran green-to-checkers without any yellows.

“I guess now it is my turn to add the 50 pounds,” stated Hyman, referring to the rule that all Four Cylinder Scorpion feature winners have to add 50 pounds after winning at Spencer.

The second feature saw also ran green to-checkers. Travis Montgomery was the early leader. Brother Austin passed Travis on lap four to lead a lap before Timmy Catalano powered by for the lead and eventually the win.

Mike Hyman was able to follow Catalano to the front but was never able to make a pass for the lead and settled for second at the finish line. Frarey, Travis Montgomery and Paul Flye rounded out the top five at the finish.

Holding a insurmountable point lead, Tim was asked by the announcer in victory lane about earning his first Spencer title, he responded,” We still have to race it next week.”
