Late race action in Saturday night’s 40-lap Downs Ford Modified feature race earned Eric Mauriello the checker flag at Wall Stadium Speedway. The victory was the Howell resident’s second of the season and keeps him in contention for the driving title behind Jackson’s Steve Reed and Chas Okerson of Freehold with three Saturday night points awarding races remaining.

Adam LaCicero of Lavallette was the star through most of this race as he rocketed to the lead early. Through the initial laps LaCicero fought off New Egypt’s Jason Hearne and Holmdel’s Andrew Krause before Mauriello and Trevor Alspach of Willingboro took over second and third at the halfway point.

The second half of the race saw the top drivers battle for the lead on almost every lap with LaCicero and Mauriello often racing side-by-side. The big turning point in this one came on the 37th lap when the front-runners made contact and LaCicero spun from the lead as a result.

Mauriello then picked up the lead and raced to the win over Alspach, Howell’s Justin Gumley, Derek Hopkinson of Toms River and Reed. Title contender Okerson was ninth.

“I sure didn’t want that to happen,” Mauriello said of LaCicero’s late race spin. “We were all running hard and I think I got pushed into him. I guess the officials saw it that way because they didn’t put me to the back.

“We are still looking at the points and we picked up some tonight. We are still very much in contention and this win helps a lot.”

Brick’s Joe Mongeau raced from deep in the 24-car field to win his fourth 25-lap main event in O’Shea’s Auto Repair Factory Stock racing action. Mongeau caught Jerry Koenig with just five laps remaining and then raced side-by-side for several laps before taking the lead and the win. Scott Riggleman of Manchester and Union’s Joey Helberg of slipped into second and third in the closing laps while Koenig and Howell’s Steve West completed the top five.

After suffering through misfortune several times during the season Eric Lane of Howell raced to his first ever win in the 25-lapper for the Snap-on Sportsman division. Holmdel’s Andrew Krause chased the second year driver for several laps before finishing second, with Chris Lane and Kevin Davison, both of Howell, and Manchester’s Shanon Mongeau wrapping up the top five.

Jackson’s Howie Conk fought off several competitors to win the 40-lap main event for the Elite Maintenance Limited Late Models. Anthony Crimaldi of Port Monmouth finished second and that was enough for him to earn the division’s “Triple Crown” title. Dominic Casola of Holmdel, Wall’s Cole Ormsbee and Brian Doyle of Ronkonkoma, N.Y. were third through fifth.

Brick’s Robert Sutphin, who has been successful here in both the Modified and Sportsman divisions, added a win in the Green Monster Insulation 4 Cylinder Stocks to his resume Saturday night. Christian LaCicero of Lavallette, Ronnie Mullen and Jason Lane, both of Brick, and Wall’s TJ Graves completed the top five.

Wall Stadium returns to action this Saturday (Sept. 12) featuring the Downs Ford Modifieds in a 40-lapper and the Sportsman cars, Factory Stocks, 4 Cylinder Stocks and the Green Flag Driving Experience Legend Cars in 25-lap main events. The beautifully restored cars of the Garden State Vintage Stock Car Club will also be on hand. Spectator seating for “Carnival Night” festivities opens at 5:00 p.m. and qualifying is set for 5:30 p.m. followed by main events.

Wall Stadium presents professional motorsports events on Saturdays and Sundays through September with special post-season races on October 24 and on Thanksgiving weekend in November.
