Overcoming both a wrist injury early in the season and being involved in a wreck in the Saturday’s final 40-lap main event to finish sixth Jackson’s Steven Reed raced to his first ever Downs Ford Modified stock car driving championship at Wall Stadium Speedway Saturday night. Derek Hopkinson of Toms River bounced back from three major wrecks during the campaign to win the Saturday night series finale.
Holmdel’s Andrew Krause led the initial 27 laps of the contest, fighting off several challenges early, before spinning from the lead when his car and Hopkinson’s touched exiting the second turn. Hopkinson then raced to the win over Eric Mauriello and Jimmy Blewett, both of Howell, early challenger Ken Matlach of New Hyde Park, N.Y. and Brick’s Ron Frees.
Reed held the point lead going into the event with former champ Chas Okerson and Mauriello in contention. All three had a shot at the title during the contest but each had their own on-track problems. Reed’s turning point came on lap 22 when he was involved in a tangle exiting turn two. Reed’s crew performed quick right front suspension damage repair so that he could return to the track and advance to sixth for the title.
“I’ve always raced to win and let the points take care of themselves,” Reed said. “This one is for my sponsors, crew and especially my mom and dad. The crew did a great job fixing this thing and my mom and dad put their hearts into the car.”
After losing the point lead in the next to the last race of the point series Andrew Krause returned to win the driving title in the Snap-on Sportsman division finishing second to race winner Larry Thompson of Parlin. Defending champ Kevin Davison of Howell went into the contest with the point lead but was involved in an early race accident. That left title contenders Krause and Shanon Mongeau of Jackson to battle for second on the track and for first for the season.
This one boiled over with a late race caution when the duo touched in turn one with Mongeau spinning as the result. That clinched Krause’s first ever driving crown. Trevor Alspach of Willingboro claimed third in the race followed by Howell’s Chris Lane and Mongeau. Davison returned after repairs to finish ninth.
25 year veteran driver Joe Mongeau of Brick fought a stumbling motor due to a carburetor issue to finish seventh and win his first ever driving title in the O’Shea’s Auto Repair Factory Stocks. Jerry Stanzione of Keansburg led this one for 20-laps before former champ Scott Riggleman of Manchester took the lead and raced the final 5-laps to the win. Stanzione, Brick’s Rich Mongeau, Whitey Miller of Jamesburg and title contender Joey Helberg of Union completed the top five.
The race for the Green Flag Driving Experience Legend Car title came down to the race for the lead in the 25-lap main events. Contenders Brian Spencer of Edison and Howell’s Robert French wrestled for the lead for much of the race before French motored to the front for good on lap 19 to claim his first ever crown. Pennsylvania’s Mitchell Dowd slipped into second late in the race while Spencer settled for third. Whiting’s Casey Robicheau and Nick Van Wickle wrapped up the top five.
An emotional Anthony Crimaldi of Port Monmouth celebrated his first ever Elite Maintenance Limited Late Model driving title after finishing sixth in the 25-lapper. Two-time and defending champ Brian Doyle of Ronkonkoma, N.Y. won the race while Jackson’s Howie Conk, early leader Bill Vanderveen of Beachwood, Wall’s Cole Ormsbee and Mike Tillett completed the top five.
Brick’s Ronnie Mullen clinched the Green Monster Insulation 4 Cylinder Stock driving title by finishing second to Lavallette’s Christian LaCicero in the 25-lap main event. Brick’s Mike Bilello, contender TJ Graves of Wall and Brick’s Robert Sutphin were third through fifth. Mullen also won a Legend Cars race for drivers over age 40.
With the 2015 Saturday night season complete the shore speedway now focuses on post-season events. An automotive flea market is set for Saturday, October 10, before the speedway hosts the annual “Spooky Spectacular” stock car race program on Saturday afternoon, October 24. Spectator seating opens at noon with qualifying and main events to follow.
The “Awards Dinner” will then be enjoyed on Sunday, November 1, and the annual “Turkey Derby” will be presented on Friday, Saturday and Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend.
