Lancaster National Speedway’s stock car program built upon its strong opening day with a solid turn out for the second race of the regular season. Fans and racers enjoyed one final Saturday afternoon show before the schedule moves back to its traditional Saturday night start time.

Modified standout Patrick Emerling of Orchard Park, N.Y. grabbed the win in the 35-lap Sunoco Sportsman feature. Emerling was one of three Modified drivers that took take advantage of the week off from the Race of Champions Modified Series schedule to get some valuable track time on Lancaster’s improved racing surface.

Emerling was joined in the field by RoC Modified Series regulars Tony Hanbury and Chuck Hossfeld. A total of 25 Sunoco Sportsman took the green flag for the 35-lap feature.

Billy Burd and opening day feature winner Jake Lyon led the field to the start with Burd taking the early race lead. Mike Fiebelkorn, Jr. quickly moved from his fifth starting position to move into second place behind Burd.

Burd and Fiebelkorn quickly pulled away from the field during the race’s opening laps. Fiebelkorn’s day came to an end on lap 10, however, when electrical problems caused his car to stop on the track.

This moved Lyon and Emerling up to second and third respectively for the ensuing restart. Emerling slid into second after the race resumed and then set his sights on the leader. As the field came to the start/finish line on lap 14, Emerling was able edge Burd to take over the top spot.

Emerling was unstoppable the rest of the way as he drove on to score the victory. It was his second win at Lancaster; his first came last year in the Tommy Druar/Tony Jankowiak Memorial 110.

Burd had to settle for second for his second-straight top three finish to open the season. John Barber finished third. Chuck Hossfeld finished fourth after a terrible start to his day. He was involved in a heat race incident that damaged his left front suspension, and then spun out on the second lap of the feature. Neal Dietz, Jr. rounded out the top five.

The X-Press Signs Late Models made their first appearance of the 2016 season. Bobby Weber of Clarence Center, N.Y. dominated the 25-lap feature to make a return to victory lane, a place he visited three times last year.

Weber and Sam Fullone traded the lead back and forth during the race’s first five laps until Fullone spun out after contact with Eldon King III. Weber went virtually unchallenged for the remainder of the race. Dave Whittaker finished second. Fullone, King II and Frank Batista rounded out the top five.

Mark Hoch of West Seneca, N.Y. won 25-lap the Advance Auto Parts Street Stock feature. Hoch cruised to the win to improve his opening day result by one position.

Many of the drivers expected to challenge Hoch had issues on the race’s opening lap and spent most of the race coming back through the field. Opening day winner TJ Cochrane spun out in turn three while Dave Wilson spun on the frontstretch and Keith Flanigan got a flat tire. All three drivers finished in the top five on opening day.

Wilson came back to finish second, but couldn’t get close to Hoch. Trevor Pettit finished third after starting on the pole. Tommy Wentland finished fourth. Cochrane rallied to finish in the top five.

Kevin Bainbridge returned to victory lane in the Roaming Buffalo 4-Cylinders. Bainbridge started on the pole and led all 25 laps to back up his opening day win. Bobby Hanel, Jr. finished second followed by Jason Anasiewicz, Dan Dressel and Howard Guthrie.

Stock car racing at Lancaster returns to its traditional Saturday night “under the lights” format on Saturday, May 14. Lancaster National Speedway welcomes the New York Super Stock Series as they join the three weekly home track classes for Spirit Night. Racing begins at 6:30 p.m.
