Tim Brown of Tobaccoville capped off 2015 by taking his 10th championship. Yet the 2016 season hasn’t started off on a strong note for the man who holds just about every record
possible at Bowman Gray Stadium.

With a 16th place finish in the season-opener and a 9th place finish one week later, Brown fell down to 11th on the points ladder for the Brad’s Golf Cars Modified Series. But he was able to play to his strengths on Saturday to turn things around - a timely accomplishment with Saturday’s racing awarding double points.

Starting lineup for Saturday’s first 25-lap race was determined strictly by qualifying. And as one advantage of a low points ranking, Brown took his time trial lap later in the session when the track conditions improved as rubber was laid down by previous qualifiers. Not to mention that his car has been turning record-breaking laps this season.

With two poles in two qualifying attempts, Brown kept the record going and grabbed his third pole. He started up front and held on to win.

Then he came back in the second race and quietly made his way from an 8th place start up to 5th. While the second-race climb didn’t receive much fanfare, it did give Brown a higher average finish than any other competitor – earning him the most points possible.

Brown moves from 11th up to 4th in the points. But he still has a long way to go: Burt Myers of Walnut Cove turned in the second highest average finish to take almost as many points as Brown.

Myers stays in the points lead, with Lee Jeffreys of Wallburg moving up to second in the points.

Saturday was not only double points – but it was the Whelen Sportsman 100 for the Yates Grading & Paving Sportsman Series. The long-distance battle put racers to the test, and points leader Zack Clifton of Walkertown was caught up in wreckage as a result of the intense pressure.

Clifton fell a lap down but was still able to claw his way to a seventh place finish. However, he dropped from the points lead down to second.

Tommy Neal of Walkertown was the man to beat on Saturday, grabbing the checkered for the 100-lapper and taking over the points lead. However, he can’t rest at all – Zack Clifton is just one point behind Neal.

In the Q104.1 New Country Street Stock Series, Derrick Rice of Kernersville finishes third in the Whelen Street Stock 50 to keep a solid points lead. Austin Edwards of Winston-Salem came in sixth, moving him up to second in the points.

And in the McDowell Heating & Air Stadium Stock Series, A.J. Sanders of Mocksville slips from the lead down to third in the points. Wesley Thompson of Advance won on Saturday to rocket into the points lead. Billy Cameron Jr. moves up to second in the points.

This Saturday is the night you’ve been waiting for – it’s $2 Ladies’ Night presented by the Triad’s 1057. Man Up! Women are admitted for only two dollars to see the NASCAR Hall of Fame 100 for the Modifieds, plus racing for the Sportsman, Street Stock, and Stadium Stock Series.

Gates open at 6:00 for practice, and the first race begins at 8:00 PM – this Saturday night. Ticket prices, directions, and more information can be found online at www.bowmangrayracing.com or by calling (336) 723-1819.
