Rebounding from several Saturday nights of misfortune defending champion Steve Reed raced to victory in the 40-lap main event for the Downs Ford Modified stock cars at Wall Stadium Speedway Saturday night. It was Reed’s first win of the year and the 24th of his career at the third mile paved oval.

Due to several mechanical problems and the poor finishes that resulted Reed took full advantage of a front row starting spot to rocket to the lead at the outset. New Egypt’s Jason Hearne was his first challenger before Howell’s Eric Mauriello took over second spot on lap eight. Meanwhile Howell’s Jimmy Blewett advanced from a tenth starting spot to take over second with seven laps remaining. Blewett then chased Reed to the finish line. Mauriello, Hearne and Ron Frees of Brick completed the top five.

“We’ve had some bad luck recently, but then again racing is often mostly back luck with a few bright spots like this added in,” Reed said. “We’ll be back in the field due to the handicap after this win and then it is a matter of picking the right lanes and things going your way.”

Dom Fattaruso of Brick celebrated his birthday in style as he won the companion 30-lapper for the Snap On Sportsman cars. Fattaruso raced through the field to take the lead with an inside pass in turn four on the 19th lap. Early leader Larry Thompson of Parlin nailed down second with Brick’s Robert Sutphin, Ricky Collins of Willow Grove, Pa. and Tyler Truex of Mayetta completing the top five.

West Milford’s Mike Alcaro came from deep in the field to win the 25-lapper for the Green Flag Driving Experience Legend Cars. After battling with eventual runner-up Kevin Nowak of Medford, N.Y., Alcaro took the lead with seven laps remaining. Mitchell Dowd of Pottstown, Pa., Richie Davidowitz of Medford, N.Y. and Vinny Troia of Browns Mills were third through fifth.

TJ Graves of Wall borrowed a ride and raced to his first ever win in the Surfside Collision 4 Cylinder Stock feature. Todd Pilla of Beachwood chased him most of the way while Brick’s Jason Lane, Fred Cannock of Port Monmouth and Howell’s Brian Osborn wrapped up the top five.

Like Graves, Harry Schaeffer of Careret drove a borrowed car to victory in the 40-lapper for the Elite Maintenance Limited Late Models. Brian Doyle of Ronkonkoma, N.Y., Mike Tillett of Beachwood, Jackson’s Greg Gastelu and Glen Conk completed the top five.

Matt Janisch of Nazareth, Pa. won the 25-lapper for the visiting Three Quarter Midgets.

Racing returns this Saturday evening (June 11) with grandstand seating opening at 5:00 p.m. and qualifying starting at 5:45 p.m. Main event action, which will start around 7:00 p.m., will see the Modifieds in a 40-lapper, Sportsman cars in a 30-lapper and the Limited Late Models, Factory Stocks, Legend Cars and the Dirt Cars all in 25-lappers.
