Nearing the halfway point in the 2016 season at Bowman Gray Stadium, many competitors have stood in Winner’s Circle. But uncharacteristically, Burt Myers of Walnut Cove hasn’t been one
of them.
Always a fierce competitor in the Brad’s Golf Cars Modified Series, Myers has tallied up a win by mid-June every single year since 2002. But in 2016, he hasn’t qualified on the pole or won a race yet.
But what has he done? He’s finished consistently each and every time with a top-five finish in all but one race. He may not have celebrated in Victory Lane this season, but he’s sitting proudly on top of the points rankings.
“Points are great, but I want to win,” said Myers. “When it gets down to a couple races to go and we haven’t won yet, I might be a little worried – but we’ve still got a long way to go.”
“We’ve got a great car and we’re working on it every week – and we’re getting better and better and better,” said Myers. “We’re there. If you put yourself in contention long enough, it comes.”
Meanwhile, Defending Champion Tim Brown of Tobaccoville has spent the season coming back from his 16th place finish in the opening night 200-lapper. But with two wins in the last two weeks, Brown has now climbed up to
third in the points standings.
“It wasn’t a good points night for us,” said Brown after his win on Saturday. “Burt finished right behind us. We need to win. We need to just keep setting on the pole and winning races – and if it’s meant to be, the points will come.
And if it’s not, then I’m doing all I can.”
Myers currently sits 30 points ahead of second-ranked John Smith of Mount Airy. Brown is just two points behind Smith in third.
In the Yates Grading & Paving Sportsman Series, Zack Clifton of Walkertown finished fourth in the first race and then won the second – boosting him up to the points lead. Tommy Neal of Walkertown drops down to second after
finishing 10th and fifth.
Derrick Rice of Kernersville fought his way up from a 14th place start to take third in Saturday’s race for the Q104.1 New Country Street Stock Series. He stays the points leader by a strong margin. Brian Wall of Winston-Salem
finished right on Rice’s bumper to move up to second in the points standings.
The McDowell Heating & Air Stadium Stock Series raced in their annual 50-lapper on Saturday and A.J. Sanders of Mocksville made his way up to third. That bumps him from third in the points up to the points lead. Billy Cameron,
Jr. took seventh, dropping him out of the points lead down to second in the points standings.
This Saturday is a fan favorite: the Camping World Modified Twin 50s. It’s some of the best Modified action you’ll see plus racing for the Sportsman, Street Stock, and Stadium Stock Divisions. And the night will end with a wild 109
U-Pull-It Skid Race.
Gates open at 6:00 for practice, and the first race begins at 8:00 PM – this Saturday night. Ticket prices, directions, and more information can be found online at www.bowmangrayracing.com or by calling (336) 723-1819.
