It’s officially the halfway point at Bowman Gray Stadium.
With eight events left out of sixteen scheduled events for the Brad’s Golf Cars Modified Series, time is beginning to run out for the competitors to make a play at the championship. But if there’s anything that the
Madhouse has taught us over the years, it’s that anything can happen at the legendary quarter mile.
Right now, Burt Myers of Walnut Cove is sitting on top of the points ladder – and after Saturday night’s dominant performance, will anyone be able to catch him?
Myers was the fastest qualifier, passed by Brandon Ward and Lee Jeffreys to claim the win in the first race, and then followed it all up with a strong finish in the second race. He pulled in more points than any other
competitor.
“We’ve been working really hard with this car and it’s been there. It’s been right there – we just lacked that little bit,” said Myers. “We were so close, and it was just one minor adjustment that set this car on
fire.”
This Saturday, the Modifieds compete in twin 25-lap races. Points are awarded based on the highest average finish for the two races, leading to a high stakes situation for Myers. Those drivers who finish well
gain more points than they would under the previous system of each race awarding points independently. However, a slip in one race spells a much worse points loss.
Myers was the man to beat on Saturday, but the previous few weeks weren’t that way. In the last set of twin 25-lappers on May 28, Tim Brown of Tobaccoville had the highest average finish. The night rocketed
Brown from 11th in the points up to fourth – so could Brown perform just as strongly this Saturday?
The current points standings have Myers on top with a 31 point gap between him and second-ranked John Smith of Mount Airy. Tim Brown sits in third, four points behind Smith.
Zack Clifton of Walkertown entered Saturday in the points lead for the Yates Grading and Paving Sportsman Series. But as he fought for the win with John Holleman of Winston-Salem and Michael Tilley of
Winston-Salem, Clifton collided with the guard rail. He falls out of the points lead, with Tommy Neal of Walkertown moving up to reclaim the top spot.
In the Q104.1 New Country Street Stock Series, Derrick Rice of Kernersville maintains the points lead despite getting a flat tire in Saturday’s racing. Austin Edwards of Pinnacle finishes second to move up to
second in the points.
Billy Cameron, Jr. of Salibsury claimed victory on Saturday, boosting him up to tie A.J. Sanders of Mocksville for the points lead in the McDowell Heating & Air Stadium Stock Series.
This Saturday is Midway Mobile Storage Night with the high-stakes Modified Twin 25s. Also on the schedule is racing for the Sportsman, Street Stock, and Stadium Stock Divisions.
Gates open at 6:00 for practice, and the first race begins at 8:00 PM – this Saturday night. Ticket prices, directions, and more information can be found online at www.bowmangrayracing.com or by calling (336)
