DAVE WILSON WINS JEFF BROWN, SR. MEMORIAL STREET STOCK 25 AT LANCASTER

Catalano snaps Emerling’s Sportsman win streak; Steffenhagen & Woch win

Lancaster National Speedway paid tribute to a fallen member of the racing community on Saturday night with the Jeff Brown, Sr. Memorial Street Stock 25. Brown was the father of two-time U.S. Open Late Model winner and Sportsman driver, Jeff Brown, Jr. He was very involved in helping his son with his racing endeavors along with helping others that needed it. Brown passed away during the offseason.

One of those that Jeff Brown, Sr. helped along the way was Advance Auto Parts Street Stock driver, Dave Wilson. It was Wilson who came up with the idea to hold the race in Brown’s memory and provided a $250 bonus that was paid out across the top three finishers. As a further tribute, Wilson changed car number for the night from #21 to #3, which is the number that Jeff Brown, Jr. runs on his cars.

A field of 18 Advance Auto Parts Street Stocks took the green flag for the event with rookie Trevor Pettit taking the early lead. Andy Cryan got by Pettit on lap 3 to take the top spot away and started to pull away from the field.

Wilson started 12th and he worked his way to the front of the pack along with Terry Weldy and Mark Hoch. That trio caught Cryan around lap 10, but it took Wilson five more laps to take over the lead.

Wilson slowly pulled away at the end while Weldy and Hoch were left to battle for the runner-up position. Wilson crossed under the checkered flag for his third win of the season. Weldy edged Hoch for second. Tommy Wentland and Jarrod Brown rounded out the top five.

In addition to the cash bonuses for the top three finishers, Towel City Tire awarded a new tire the fourth, fifth and sixth place finishers. The rest of the drivers to finish in the top ten also received a new tire courtesy of Bob Mullen and East Coast Speed.

Tommy Catalano of Ontario, N.Y. picked up his first win of the season in the Sunoco Sportsman to snap the four-race win streak of Patrick Emerling. Catalano led 32 of 35 laps from the fifth starting position to earn the victory.

Catalano passed pole sitter Bobby Lippa, Jr. for the lead on a lap 3 restart to take control of the race. A pair of early race caution slowed things at the beginning, but then the race went caution from lap 4 to the conclusion. This allowed Catalano to open up a sizable advantage over the rest of the pack.

Jake Lyon and Emerling tried to chase down Catalano, but ran out of laps. Lyon settled for second, while Billy Burd finished third. Emerling faded late in the race and saw his win streak end with a fourth place finish. Defending track champion, Mark Pennell, rounded out the top five.

The NY Super Stock Series made its first and only appearance of the season at Lancaster. Jim Steffenhagen of Marion, N.Y. won the 50-lap feature. Steffenhagen passed Jake Wylie for the lead on lap 10 when Wylie suffered engine problems. He then held off Mitchell Wright the rest of the way for the win.

A multi-car pileup on the race’s opening lap took out several cars, including heat race winner Bill Frisbie, Jr.and series points leader Tim Gullo.

The win for Steffenhagen completed a NYSS weekend sweep after he won their feature on Friday night Spencer Speedway. Wright finished second followed by Steve Peserak, Brian Wozniak and Chris Vogler.

Bobby Woch won the Roaming Buffalo 4-Cylinder feature in his first start in the Team 49/King Oil #45. The key to victory for Woch was a lap 7 restart as Joe Brunka and Kevin Bainbridge got together while racing for second. Woch slipped by and then made the eventual race winning pass on Dan Dressel one lap later.

Bainbridge recovered to finish second. Ransomville Speedway Street Stock driver, Austin Hauser, finished third in his first pavement race in Jim Dauer’s #73. Frank Prell and Jamie Woods rounded out the top five.

This Thursday night, June 30, the Race of Champions Modified Series returns to Lancaster for the second annual Ol’ Boy Cup 60 Bill Colton Memorial. The stars of the RoC Series will battle in a 60-lap sprint around Lancaster’s ½-mile. The NYPA TQ Midgets, Advance Auto Parts Street Stocks and Roaming Buffalo 4-Cylinders will also be in action. Racing starts at 7 p.m.

Fans outside the Western New York area can watch the race live via pay-per-view at Speed51.com. Every lap of racing action will be streamed live using a single-camera video broadcast. The web stream will be blacked out for a 150-mile radius around Lancaster.
