The eye of the storm has passed at Bowman Gray Stadium, and now the thunder picks up at its heaviest as the Madhouse picks up racing this Saturday night.
As part of a tradition to honor our nation, there was no racing at Bowman Gray Stadium on Saturday, July 2. Competitors had the week off to repair and hone their machines in preparation for what was to
come this weekend: Double Points Night.
There is no easing in after the fourth of July break. The Madhouse slams the gas on the season with the second of three Double Points Nights. All races award double the normal amount of points, so the
stakes are twice as high.
In the Brad’s Golf Cars Modified Series, Burt Myers of Walnut Cove has been able to keep his distance over the rest of the field. He enters Saturday’s race with a 39-point lead.
But it only takes one bad night to spell doom for your points total. Such was the case in last event for John Smith of Mount Airy. He entered the night ranked second in the points but ran into trouble, dropping
him down to fifth in the points standings.
Moving up to take Smith’s place is a man who is no stranger to the points battles at the legendary quarter mile: Tim Brown of Tobaccoville. He claimed the championship last season but has started off 2016
on shaky ground with 16th and 9th place finishes in the first two races.
Tying Brown for second place is Jason Myers of Walnut Cove. The younger of the Myers brothers has a particular appreciation for the pressure of a Double Points Night. Last season, Myers grabbed the most
wins, led the most laps, and earned the most poles – yet he didn’t claim the championship due in large part to wrecking during a double points night early in the season.
To add to the mix, Saturday’s event will be the O’Reilly Auto Parts 100 – one of the infamous 100-lappers that set the field with a random draw for starting position. The fastest cars may start in the rear and
have to fight their way to the front. The double-file restart cone will be their greatest tool as they strategically make their way forward.
Plus there’s another ingredient to mention: 9,000 of them, to be exact. The Fans’ Challenge will be in play for Saturday’s race, giving the top four qualifiers the option of starting in the rear in order to attempt
a high finish and earn the $9,000 prize pool.
Zack Clifton of Walkertown currently leads the way in the Yates Grading and Paving Sportsman Series. The newly married competitor comes back from his honeymoon to battle in twin 20-lappers, hoping to
hold on to the lead. Tommy Neal of Walkertown is just a slim two points behind him in second.
In the Q104.1 New Country Street Stock Series, Derrick Rice of Kernersville maintains his points lead. And Billy Cameron, Jr. won in last event, giving him the top spot on the points ladder for the McDowell
Heating & Air Stadium Stock Series.
The action commences this Saturday. The Modifieds battle in the O’Reilly Auto Parts 100 with racing for all other divisions.
Gates open at 6:00 for practice, and the first race begins at 8:00 PM – this Saturday night. Ticket prices, directions, and more information can be found online at www.bowmangrayracing.com or by calling (336)
