So far the 2016 NASCAR racing season at Spencer Speedway has been one of domination by a few teams. But last Friday was different as three new names reached victory lane.
In the Sunoco Modifieds it was Tommy Catalano picking up the win, his first of the year at Spencer. Maddy Virts won a 4-Cylinder non-point special back in early June. She won her first point’s race last Friday. And in the Super Six division it was Ashley Schoonmaker claiming the victory.
The 35-lap NASCAR Sunoco Modified feature saw Kevin Timmerman blast into the lead from his outside pole starting position. Andy Lewis tagged onto Timmerman’s tail, but was passed by Eddie Hawkins and then Tommy Catalano.
The fast pace of the race saw the field start lapping other cars by lap eight. Tommy Catalano made his move to pass Timmerman on lap 19. Once ahead he was able to stretch out an advantage. Tommy’s mom, Amy looped her car around in turn four, but immediately recovered avoiding the yellow on lap 21.
The yellow did fly on lap 28, when new comer Damon Frutchie, spun in the second turn. This bunched the field together, but Tommy was able to quickly re-establish his lead. Four laps later, Mike Leaty moved past Timmerman for second. He would make a charge at Tommy, but fall short.
The top five at the finish line were Catalano, Leaty, Timmerman, Hawkins and Daryl Lewis Jr.
The 20-lap saw outside pole sitter, Ashley Schoonmaker, take the lead and never look back. She would lead all of the laps in a race that would run green-to-checkers. Her sister Carrie ran second but fell back in the waning laps of the race.
At the checkers it was Ashley followed by multi-time winner Barrett Schenk. Tim Faro, Brandon Allen, Ashley’s sister Carrie Schoonmaker rounded out the top five finishers.
The Auto Value 4-Cylinder race saw the yellow out on the first lap, when James Bardo spun in the second turn. After that the race would run caution free. Early leader, Jacob Gustafson lost the lead to Maddy Virts on lap four. Gustafson was able to hold multi-time winner Mike Hyman in third, thus recording his best finish of the year. Rounding out the top five at the finish line were Tom Alloco and Jennifer Dennie.
SPENCER Notes: One new comer to the speedway did not have a great opener. Geoff Sharkey only make a lap and a half in his NASCAR Sunoco Modified before he destroyed his car in a second turn crash…..Thanks to track handicapper Melissa Brusso for her help with the information in this story.
The Race of Champion Modifieds return Friday, July 22. On the race card Spencer Speedway will be hosting the third appearance of the NYS Super Stocks. These full fender machines will be on hand for their 25-lap feature run. Race time begins at 7:00 pm.
Anyone who brings their ticket stub back the following week gets a $3 discount off an adult or senior ticket.
Spencer Speedway is located just fifteen minutes east of Rochester, NY, along Route 104 in the Town of Williamson. Spencer Speedway is the local “ NASC AR Place to Race” for Central New York in 2016. Points earned each week at Spencer are counted into the national NASC AR Whelen All-American Points.
