PENNELL, WEBER, CARBONE, BAINBRIDGE & McCARTHY PICK UP RETRO NIGHT WINS AT LANCASTER

Lancaster National Speedway hosted Retro Night on Saturday night with race fans wearing their best “old school” racing shirts and hats plus appearances from the original Batmobile and the KISS This tribute band. The action on the track also had a retro feel to it as some familiar names that have been around Lancaster for quite some time found their way to victory lane.

Mark Pennell of Lancaster, N.Y. picked up his first win of the season in the Sunoco Sportsman. The defending track champion led all but one of the 35 laps in a dominating performance.

Rookie Owen Bednasz and Matt Druar led the 21-car field to the green flag with Druar taking the lead on lap one. Pennell quickly advanced from the fourth starting position to pass Druar on the race’s second lap to take the lead.

Pennell was joined by Jake Lyon at the front of the field and the pair drove away from the pack as the first half of the race went caution free. The yellow flag finally flew on lap 17 for a spin by Tim Nies after his right rear tire went flat. Nies picked up his first career heat win earlier in the night.

A second caution period on lap 25 set up a final 10 lap sprint to the finish with Pennell and Lyon in a four-car freight train with George Skora III and Amy Catalano. Lyon was able to get to Pennell’s back bumper in the closing laps, but could not over take the reigning track champ.

The win was an emotional one for Pennell and the Thompson Racing team as it was their first win since the passing of crew chief Joe Reilly. Jake Jankowiak and several others have stepped up this year to help the Thompsons to try and fill the void left by their departed team member.

Lyon finished second for his best finish since his opening day win. Skora was third followed by Amy Catalano and Billy Burd.

The X-Press Signs Late Models made their second appearance of the 2016 season, and once again it was Bobby Weber of Clarence Center of victory lane at the end of the 25 lap feature. The three-time track champion led 24 laps while en route to the win.

The only lap Weber didn’t lead was the second lap of race when teammate Tommy Catalano got by him on the outside. Catalano, however, spun out on the very next laps in turn four while trying to hang on to the outside groove.

Catalano came back through the field to challenge Weber for the win in a green-white-checkered dash to the finish, but Weber held him off by a car length in the end.

In the Advance Auto Parts Street Stocks, Lou Carbone of Buffalo earned his first career victory. Carbone was involved in a three-car battle for first place early in the race with Jim Bryant and Dave Wilson, but when Bryant spun out after contact with Wilson it gave Carbone lead for good.

Carbone then had to hold off Jerome Hruby during the second half of the race. Hruby was all over the back bumper of the leader, but could not budge Carbone out of the way. The runner up effort by Hruby was a career best finish.

The win made for a long overdue return to victory lane for the Carbone family, which has raced at Lancaster for over 30 years. Lou’s brother Joe was a feature winner in the Street Stocks and Late Models, and Joe’s son Tony currently races in the Sportsman. The Carbone family is a fixture in the grandstands as well, decked out in orange shirts and jackets that match the color of their race cars.

Kevin Bainbridge was credited with his sixth win of the year in the Roaming Buffalo 4-Cylinders. Bainbridge was awarded the win after the original winner was disqualified in post-race tech inspection. Bobby Woch finished second with Rich Bartel in third.

Paul McCarthy of Clarence, N.Y. won a 15-lap exhibition race for the Classic Asphalt Modified Series. The vintage open-wheeled cars were a fitting addition to the Retro Night theme.

Coming up on July 23, Lancaster National Speedway hosts Christmas in July Night. There will be a children’s bike giveaway and an appearance by Santa Claus. The NYPA TQ Midgets will join Lancaster’s three weekly home track divisions. Racing starts at 6:30 p.m.
