RoC 250 guaranteed starting spot to winner of second 50-lapper

This coming Saturday night, July 23, Mahoning Valley Speedway proudly presents the Third Annual Bob “Heavy” Scherer Memorial. The race, which is twin 50 lappers for the Modifieds and pays $1800 to win each, honors the former driver/mechanic who was a key fixture among the ranks of the Eastern Pennsylvania asphalt short track circuit.

It was announced also by the Ferris Mowers Race of Champions Asphalt Modified Series fueled by Sunoco that the winner of the second 50-lap Modified feature will be awarded a guaranteed starting spot in the 66th Annual Race of Champions 250 at Oswego Speedway on September 15-17, 2016.

Scherer passed away while in hospice care on Saturday evening, May 24, 2014, after a brief bout with cancer. A former driver, the 57-year old may have best been recognized for his years of work as the chief mechanic for his brother-in-law, champion pavement Modified star Eric Beers.

That same evening and just prior to his passing, Beers had won that night’s Modified feature at Mahoning Valley Speedway.

As a member of the infamous “Beers Gang” Scherer started racing for the late Dale Beers in a Late Model at Dorney Park Speedway. He then progressed into a Modified at Dorney, did some dirt racing at Nazareth Speedway and returned to the pavement at Mahoning Valley Speedway and Evergreen Raceway. His final win took place on June 3, 1989 at Mahoning.

Afterwards he began working hand-in-hand with Eric Beers as his career was beginning at that period. As the top wrench for Beers, wins started to come early and often. Scherer was instrumental in Beers’ twice being track titlist at Mahoning and Evergreen as well as his success with the RoC Pavement and NASCAR Modified Tours. A crowning moment came in 2004 when Beers won the Sunoco Race of Champions 200. Beers was quick to credit Scherer for the work he performed on his car that memorable day.

And, while Beers was racing on the NASCAR Modified Tour for the DeLange Racing Team in later years, Scherer opted to stay at home were his nightly efforts in the garage was significant to the on track achievements.

Scherer also put his expertise to good use with the third generation of Beers racers, Kailyn and Austin, when they began running Quarter Midgets at Blue Mountain. Kailyn now races in the Pro 4 division at Mahoning Valley and Scherer had his hands in that car’s set-up as well.

Roger Heffelfinger Jr., won the inaugural Bob “Heavy” Scherer Memorial race on September 27, 2014 which was a 50 lapper. It had been 27 years since Heffelfinger won a feature at Mahoning Valley until that night. Heffelfinger drove for the late Dale Beers Sr., Scherer’s father-in-law.

Roger Heffelfinger Sr., had at one time drove for the elder Beers too and even won a memorial race at Dorney Park Speedway in his car, which was the Dale Beers Jr., Memorial.

On October 4 of last year the second Scherer Memorial was run, a 100-lapper won by Austin Kochenash, who interestingly is the grandson of Heffelfinger Sr., keeping that connection is going between the Beers/Scherer families.

Anyone who wishes to sponsor a lap can see JoAnn Scherer prior to the start of heat races.

Also on the card will be Late Models, Street Stocks, Dirt Mods, Pro 4s and Hobby Stocks plus Kids Big Wheels at intermission.

Grandstands open at 4:00 pm and racing begins at 6:00. Warm-ups will get underway at 4:00. Pit gates will open at 11:30 am for early paid practice which gets underway at 12:30. Adult front gate admission is $22. There is a $2 discount for students, seniors 65+ and active Military.
