Under a nearly full moon, on a hot and muggy summer night, fans at Chemung Speedrome witnessed some great racing in a five-division show. Winners included Zack Curren (Sunoco Modifieds), Nick Robinson (Super Stocks), Kyle Lingerfelt and Zack Wheeler (4 Cylinder FWD/RWD), Brandon DeBrakeleer (INEX Legends) and Bryce Bailey and Garrett Zacharias (Bandoleros Bandit/Outlaw).
It’s been said before at Chemung – if your name, or any part of it is or sounds like ‘Zack’ chances are you were in the discussion at the track. Friday night Zack Curren and Zack Knowlden were the only race leaders, but Curren picked up his second win and tightened up the championship points. Heat wins went to Gene Sharpsteen and Knowlden, who then made up the front row for the 40-lap feature. Zack Knowlden led the way at the drop of the green. By lap five he had a bit of a lead over Sharpsteen, Curren, Nick Morich and Jimmy Zacharias. Curren went three-wide and emerged in second place. Once there the gap between him and Knowlden began to shrink. By lap 10 Curren was right there with Knowlden, who held him off until the 18th lap. Curren got the inside lane and made what was his race-winning pass. The only caution came when Morich tapped Sharpsteen and turned him around. The front row was all Zack’s – Curren and Knowlden in front of Zacharias and Connor Sellars. Curren prevailed but Zacharias passed Sellars and set his sights on Knowlden. The rookie driver did a tremendous job and displayed veteran moves in keeping Zacharias behind him. TJ Zacharias was also on the move and got around Sellars with 10 laps remaining. With five to go it was clear this one was Curren’s to lose. The question was who would finish second. Zacharias put his experience to work, found an opening and took over second on the final lap. At the strip it was Curren, Zacharias, Knowlden, TJ Zacharias and Sellars. “The car wasn’t what I wanted in the heat so we did some work on it and it was smooth sailing from there,” Curren said.
Nick Robinson, point leader in the Super Stocks, picked up a double points-paying win to pad his lead and increase his hopes for the 2016 title. Chad Lane, second in points entering the night, experienced the good and the bad. The good came with his first heat race win. The bad came in the 25-lap feature when he lost a wheel, retired, and finished last. Robinson led the caution-filled event early on, but a tap from Mike Nichols brought out a caution with 11 laps complete. Lane inherited the lead over Randy Davenport. Two laps later Lane had a tire go down and it resulted in a caution period. Jim House was then the leader, but for just one lap when Robinson again surfaced and led the way. Nichols was also back on the charge and was engaged in a battle with Robinson for the lead. The caution for Lane’s lost wheel came on lap 19 and set up a restart with Robinson and Nichols in the front row. Robinson led the way but Frank Chapman overtook Nichols for second as the laps clicked off. The final caution came when Nichols got into Chapman and both restarted at the rear. Randy Davenport moved up two spots to second for the restart. Robinson got the better of him and pulled away over those final three laps. The checkered flag flew over Robinson’s #15 for the fifth time this year. Davenport was second, followed by Chapman, Derrick Tarbox and Nichols. Robinson, away all week at Correctional Officer training, gave huge props to his crew. “I leave on Sunday and don’t get back until I pull in here at 7:00. There is no way I’d be here without all of them,” he said from victory lane.
Kyle Lingerfelt is one fast-learning, hard-charging driver in the 4 Cylinder division. Last week he was the highest finisher in his FWD class. Friday night he was the highest finisher of all and scored a career-first win. Winner of his heat race, he made perfect use of his pole position starting spot and led the field on the opening lap. Behind him Jordan Mathews, Zack Bennett and Greg Moldt went at it for second through fourth. Both Bennett and Moldt got around Mathews and they watched the leader get farther and farther away. At the halfway point Lingerfelt began lapping cars while Bennett and Moldt stayed together. JP Harbst, who had won the week prior, passed Mathews and was among the top five at the halfway point. Over the final few laps Lingerfelt was closing on his teammate and point leader Monica Green. He finished a few feet shy of lapping her faltering car and scored the big win in the caution—free race. Moldt got around Bennett to finish third, with Harbst and Mathews rounding out the top five. “The car was amazing, and this is just my fourth time in it,” he said in Victory Lane. Bennett joined him there as the highest among those in RWD cars. Zack Jaynes won the other heat race that set the field for the 20-lap feature.
When the #1 INEX Legend of Brandon DeBrakeleer rolls into town he’s a serious contender for the feature win. Friday night, in putting it all together for his first Chemung win this year, he demonstrated both patience and determination to get the job done. Gary Ham powered around pole-sitter Kevin Wilkins and led early. Kevin Youngs, Alexandria Smith and David French were right behind Ham. Smith got around Youngs and was often side-by-side with Ham for the top spot. Meanwhile, DeBrakeleer was on the move after starting 11th. After passing Jimmy Zacharias he was in the top five and still charging forward. At the halfway point Ham and Smith were still battling for the lead while DeBrakeleer passed Youngs and then Smith. Once up to second DeBrakeleer didn’t wait long to make his race-winning pass. Lap 15 was his and he pulled away from the tussle for spots two through five. When the caution-free, 20-lap race was over DeBrakeleer had the win, followed by Smith, Ham, French and Zacharias. “The car was fast tonight and back to where I like it here,” he said after the win. French, Smith and Daniel Carter won the three heat races.
In the INEX Bandolero division the movie was renamed “The Bandit and Smokey”. Teddy Bowen and Zacharias got things going by winning the two heat races to set the field for their 10-lap feature. Shea Bailey led early from position one but a lap into the race the first of three cautions occurred. Bowen, the defending track champion, used his experience to get the better of Bailey on the restart to take the lead. Garrett Zacharias also got around for second. Following the second caution Zacharias dove to the inside of Bowen and led lap six, then Bowen lap seven. Hard racing between them ended when they got together in turn two going for the lead. Bowen pitted and retired. That handed the lead to Bryce Bailey with three laps remaining. Lined up beside his younger brother, Shea, he took off and never looked back. Bryce picked up his second overall win this year, followed to the line by Shea, Zacharias, DJ Shaw and Seth Zacharias. “It’s not fun sometimes racing my brother but it all worked out for us finishing one-two,” he told the crowd. Garrett Zacharias joined him in victory lane as the highest in the Outlaw division.
This Friday, July 29th Chemung presents a regular show of NASCAR Sunoco Modifieds, Super Stocks and 4 Cylinders, along with INEX Legends and Bandoleros. Pits open at 4 PM, grandstand gates open at 5:30 and practice begins at 6. First race starts at 7 PM. Admission is $13 for adults, $11 for seniors 65+, $5 for kids 6-12, and free for kids 5 and under. Fans who bring their adult or senior grandstand ticket stub from July 22nd will receive $3 off their admission price.

· Zack Curren, Nick Robinson and Kyle Lingerfelt took home the Winner Winner Chicken Dinner bonus for free wings at Buffalo Wild Wings in Horseheads, NY.
· Hot dogs will be 94 cents this Friday thanks to John Zack, who runs the concession stand. His nephew won the Sunoco Modified feature, and when Zack Curren wins he rewards everyone with the hot dog special the following week.
