Lancaster National Speedway celebrated Christmas in July this past Saturday complete with an appearance by Santa Claus and bicycle giveaway for children.

A pair of first time winners graced victory lane as Joe Brunka of Cheektowaga, N.Y. scored his first career Roaming Buffalo 4-Cylinder feature win and Andy Cryan of Buffalo earned his first win in the Advance Auto Parts Street Stocks. The Sunoco Sportsman feature turned out to be a war of attrition with Amy Catalano of Ontario, N.Y. coming out on top after 35 laps.

Bobby Lippa, Jr. and John Barber brought the field of 20 Sunoco Sportsman to the initial green flag. Trouble struck shortly after the leaders completed the first lap when Tommy Catalano spun on the front straightaway, which collected Matt Druar and Neal Dietz, Jr.

A spin by Owen Bednasz in turns 1 and 2 brought the yellow flag out again on lap 4. This set up a restart with Barber and Sherri Hogan on the front row. Barber and Hogan hooked wheels on the backstretch one lap after the restart, which sent Hogan hard in to the Thermal Foam in turn 3.

This set off a chain of events that saw several cars at the front of the field take damage. At least seven cars were damaged, including those of Billy Burd and Jake Lyon who were right behind Hogan and Barber. When the clean-up was complete, George Skora III was scored as the leader with Amy Catalano, Danny Knoll, Jr., Mike Ramos and Russ Gian running in the top five.

Skora took off from the field when racing resumed with Catalano in second. Burd recovered from the damage he took in the melee on the backstretch to move back into the third position on lap 14. Tommy Catalano and Jake Lyon overcame their earlier issues to work back into the top five as well.

The yellow flag flew again on lap 20 when the engine expired in Neal Dietz’s car. When the race went back to green, Skora could not get up to speed and pulled off the track with an engine issue. Skora’s demise shook up the front of the field with cars trying to avoid Skora as he slowed. Amy Catalano took over the lead with her son, Tommy, landing in second place.

The youngest Catalano in the field, 16-year-old Timmy Catalano, brought out the race’s final yellow flag on lap 27. This set up a crucial restart with Amy Catalano ahead of Burd, Tommy Catalano and Lyon. When the green flag flew Amy Catalano pushed up the track in turn two and took Burd with her up the banking. Tommy Catalano squeezed through to capture the lead from his mom.

Amy Catalano came back one lap later to drive around the outside of her son to regain the lead. Jake Lyon moved up to second late in the race to make a run at Catalano, but came up short in the end. Catalano crossed the finish line first for her second career win at Lancaster. Lyon settled for second place for the second week in a row. Tommy Catalano came home third. Burd and Bednasz salvaged top five finishes.

Andy Cryan led all 25 laps from the outside pole position to get his first career win in the Advance Auto Parts Street Stocks. He held off challenges from points leader Dave Wilson to secure the win. Cryan has been fast in his first full season of competition, but luck had not been on side until Saturday night.

Wilson fought off Lou Carbone to maintain his points lead with a runner-up finish. Carbone, Eric Brown and Jarrod Brown completed the top five.

Joe Brunka led all 25 laps from the pole position to earn his first career win in the Roaming Buffalo 4-Cylinders. Brunka led a tight four-car pack for most of the race that broke away from the field. He then had to survive a final green-white-checkered finish to collect his first win. Bobby Woch was on Brunka in the final laps and finished second. Frank Prell, Kevin Bainbridge and Rich Bartel rounded out the top five.

In the NYPA TQ Midgets, Andy Nye of Lancaster scored his first win of the season. Nye dove under Bobby Holmes on lap 13 of the 20-lap feature to take the lead for good. Holmes settled for second with Dave Wollaber just behind him in second. Nye’s brother, Shawn, finished fourth with Erik Musto completing the top five.
