All that you need to know about Saturday’s racing at Bowman Gray Stadium: It was billed as the Night of Destruction at the track known as the Madhouse.
After everyone else at the head of the pack ran into bad luck, Burt Myers of Walnut Cove was able to take over the lead and steer clear of any misfortune himself. He grabbed the checkered in the FOX8 WGHP 100 for the Brad’s
Golf Cars Modified Series.
Former Sportsman Series champ Derek Stoltz of Walkertown drew the pole for the start of the Modified 100-lapper. It was the first ever Modified start for the talented driver and crowd favorite. Stoltz shot out into the lead on the
initial start but was soon forced to pit due to his machine leaking fluid.
Burt Myers took over the lead. “Derek was running a good race there, but he was just puking water,” said Myers. “I kinda laid back, and I was curious to see what was going to happen there. I knew if we got up front it would be
ours to lose.”
Myers then had to contend with the outside row challenges from brother Jason Myers of Walnut Cove, and Tim Brown of Tobaccoville was right there giving some hard shots to the bumper of Burt Myers as well.
Burt stayed out front while Brown and Jason Myers duked it out for second. After several restarts, Brown gave a strong shot to the bumper of Jason Myers. As the 4 car of Jason Myers tried to steer back into the groove and Brown
tried to avoid any spin, the two cars collided. Brown headed off to the pits. Jason Myers headed to the rear.
Chris Fleming of Mount Airy moved up to the second place position, hoping to move past Burt Myers and grab the win. Fleming gave a few shots to Myers, particularly right after cautions – but Myers held the lead.
“I was a little snug on restarts,” said Burt Myers, whose car performed better as racing continued. “We needed green flag runs.”
Myers won, with Fleming finishing second and Lee Jeffreys of Winston-Salem taking third.
In the Yates Grading and Paving Sportsman Series, Zack Clifton of Walkertown and Michael Adams of Yadkinville battled furiously for the lead in a display of racing prowess. A late bump from Michael Adams sent Clifton spinning.
Adams went on to win, with Clifton retaliating after the fact by ramming into Adams’s car.
Adams claims the racing tap to Clifton’s bumper was unintentional. “There was water everywhere. I was slipping and sliding. I was all over my brakes – it was locking the rear up going into one down here. I could not stop,” said
Adams.
The second 20-lapper was just as wild. John Holleman of Winston-Salem led for the bulk of the race. Robbie Brewer of Winston-Salem gradually made his way up from ninth to second. The two racers have tangled before, so it
wasn’t a surprise to the crowd when a stiff shot from Brewer sent Holleman spinning out of the lead. Holleman retaliated in turn, damaging Brewer’s machine. Billy Gregg of Lexington took advantage of the opening to slip in and grab
the win.
Taylor Robbins of Winston-Salem claimed the checkered for the Q104.1 New Country Street Stock Series, her second career win. In the McDowell Heating & Air Stadium Stock Series, A.J. Sanders of Mocksville and Chris Allison of
Mocksville each won a 15-lapper.
