The fans may concentrate on the pass for the lead or the bump on the white flag lap. But drivers know that races are won and lost in the garage as much as on the track.
Jason Myers of Walnut Cove and his crew were put to the test during last event’s twin 50s. They came away with the checkered for the second race – and now Myers turns his sights to this weekend’s two-day show.
“We had a heck of a race car, but the first race we struggled,” said Myers. “I’m not sure what happened. We came over for practice this morning because we got the left front torn up last week in that wreck. So we brought it over
here to make sure everything was still okay, and we ran great in practice. We ran super great this evening in practice.”
“We qualified second. We were three hundredths off the pole and two tenths ahead of the guy in third, but the first race we just couldn’t get any grip,” said Myers. “We weren’t sure even what to do for the second race. We made a
couple adjustments hoping it would make it better – and it did.”
Myers slipped past Jonathan Brown of Winston-Salem to win the second 50-lapper, attributing the victory to his crew. “I can’t thank my guys enough for sticking with me tonight. I gave everything I had for 100 laps tonight,” said
Myers. “With this heat, it really works on you – really works on my guys. But thankfully, I was able to get a win tonight so we can celebrate all week long and bring some momentum back in here next week.”
And the heat is just a small part of the issue. This weekend will be a two-day show at Bowman Gray Stadium with the Brad’s Golf Modified Series competing on Friday night and the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour battling
on Saturday night.
Several competitors, including Jason Myers, will be there both nights.
“We’re going to have our hands full next week,” said Myers. “My guys have two races coming up next week and I’m going to work them to absolute death. But they love it as much as I do, and I can’t thank them enough.”
Jason’s brother, Burt Myers of Walnut Cove, will also be competing both nights this weekend. But Burt will additionally have the championship at stake as he defends his points lead on Friday night.
Burt Myers turned in a smooth performance last Saturday to hold on to the top spot on the points ladder. Tim Brown of Tobaccoville moved closer but still has a long way to go.
In the Yates Grading & Paving Sportsman Series, Zack Clifton of Walkertown runs into some bad luck. He’s able to stay in second, but the gap separating him from points leader Tommy Neal of Walkertown grows wider.
Derrick Rice of Kernersville finished 10th on Saturday in the Q104.1 New Country Street Stock Series. The mediocre finish cuts down dramatically on Rice’s points lead, with Brian Wall of Winston-Salem finishing second to make up
a lot of ground.
In the McDowell Heating & Air Stadium Stock Series, A.J. Sanders of Mocksville wrecked as he fought for the lead. His 10th place finish could have spelled disaster, but points challenger Billy Cameron, Jr. of Salisbury ran into
problems of his own. Now only four points separate the two drivers.
The points battles continue to heat up as the competitors look to this weekend’s two-day show at the Madhouse. On Friday night, it’s the Racing Electronics 100 for the Modifieds with racing for the Stadium Stocks, Legends,
Bandoleros, and Classic Modifieds. Then on Saturday, it’s the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour battling in the Strutmasters.com 199 – with a Sportsman 100-lapper and racing for the Street Stock Division.
Gates open at 6:00 for practice, and the first race begins at 8:00 PM on both Friday and Saturday. Ticket prices, directions, and more information can be found online at www.bowmangrayracing.com or by calling (336) 723-1819.
