Steffehagen Jr. Tops N.Y. Super Stocks

In six starts this year Kevin Timmerman, from Ontario, NY, has had six top five finishes, but no wins this year at Spencer Speedway until last Friday.

“I am glad I had Amy behind me,” stated Timmerman. “She is the owner of my RoC ride and I knew I could trust her to not knock me around.”

In New York Super Stock action, Jim Steffenhagen from Fairport, NY, grabbed the lead on the first lap from his outside pole starting spot and led all 25-laps to claim his first Super Stock feature win at Spencer this season.

Joining in the action were the Auto Value 4-Cylinder cars, where Mike Hyman added to his growing list of feature wins in 2016. He claimed his 7th feature win of the year at Spencer. In the Super Six division Barrett Schenk made a last lap, last turn pass on Tim Faro to inch out his third feature win of the year.

The 35-lap Sunoco Modified main saw the yellow come out on the first lap, when Daryl Lewis Jr. and another car came together in the first turn, sending Lewis spinning off the track. Lewis would later return to the race as double points were on the line.

The restart saw Kevin Timmerman pass Amy Catalano to take the lead for a long green flag run.

Newcomer Jimmy Zacharias was able to work his way past Mike Leaty for third on lap 25. The yellow came out four laps later, lap 29, when Tim Nies slid into the infield of the back stretch and Steven Links came to a halt in the fourth turn.

The restart saw Amy take a shot at passing Timmerman, but to no avail. At the checkers it was Timmerman followed by Amy Catalano, Jimmy Zacharias, Mike Leaty and T.J. Zacharias.

Twenty-three Super stocks started the 25-lap feature run. Jim Steffenhagen Jr. was able to grab the lead and never look back. The real racing was for second back. Tommy Barron and Mitchell Wright set up a battle for second, but the first of five yellows flew on lap three for a spin by Jay Mudra. Mudra would also cause the second yellow on lap five.

The restart saw Barron slip wide and allow Nathan Peckham to take third and start his own battle for second with Wright. Lap nine saw the yellow fly again, this time for a tangle on the back stretch between Brianna Dinzler and Tim Catalano. The restart saw the yellow fly again, when fifth place runner, Tim Gullo slowed on the track. He would return at the back of the field.

Up front Mitchell Wright seemed to be able to start to pressure Steffenhagen for the lead. The yellow came out for the fifth time on lap 19 for a double spin in the fourth turn between Shaun Frarey and Zach Willis. The restart finally saw Peckham able to pass Wright for second. At the checkers it would be Steffenhagen followed by Peckham, Wright, Barron and Billy Coyle, rounding out the top five finishers.

The 15-lap Auto Value Scorpion 4-Cylinder division saw their 15-lap feature run green-to-checkers. Dave Heimes took the early lead from his outside pole starting spot. He was battling Jacob Gustafson, who was able to lead lap five, only to fall back behind Heimes the very next lap.

On lap seven, going into the third turn, Heimes opened the door and allowed Mike Hyman to drop under him for the lead. He was followed through the hole by Travis Montgomery. Montgomery would try to pass Hyman, but to no avail. Hyman cruised to the win followed by Montgomery, Heimes, Maddy Virts and Gustafson.

The Super Sixes were the final feature of the night. Pole sitter, Andy Cocilova was the early leader with Alison Knoepfler in second. Tim Faro worked his way through the field and took third by lap seven. Up front Knoepfler passed Cocilova for the lead on lap nine. But three laps later it was faro in the lead.

On lap 13 the yellow flew for a spin in the fourth turn by Adam VanHall. The restart saw Ashley Schoonmaker, winner of the last two features, to take second. But her race was about to end. Lap 16, saw Schoonmaker’s efforts come to an end in a shower of sparks as she lost a wheel and spun wildly down the back stretch.

Some say yellows breed yellows and this was the case for the restart. This time the yellow flew when Carrie Schoonmaker, running second and Brandon Allen came together in the first turn. This moved Barrett Schenk into second.

The final three laps of the race saw Schenk pressure faro in side-by-side racing action. On the final lap in the final turn Schenk made the move to pass Faro. They sailed down the front chute with Schenk inches ahead of faro at the checkers. Brian Hallett, Allen and Van Grant rounded out the top five finishers.

SPENCER NOTES: A special “Meet and Greet” session took place on the front stretch, when fans were allowed down on the track to mingle with their favorite drivers and see the race cars up close and personal. Many of the teams handed out “hero cards” or candy.

Spencer Speedway will be hosting a regular night of three-star action on Friday, August 12. The Super Sixes will be running a double point 20-lap feature.
