It’s become an annual tradition – Saturday night racing at Chemung Speedrome during the NASCAR weekend at nearby Watkins Glen. For the past few years Chemung has hosted the Race of Champions Modified Tour on this special night. Feature winners included Patrick Emerling (RoC Tour Modifieds), Tim Gullo (Super Stocks), Chuck Lohmeyer (INEX Legends), and Garrett Zacharias (Bandoleros).

Daren Scherer drew the pole for the 75-lap Rod Spalding Memorial, race two at Chemung for the Ferris Mowers Race of Champions Modified tour. For 66 laps he remained out front while Patrick Emerling was consistently moving up from his eighth starting position. Once up to second he pulled off a bonsai move in turn three that gave him the lead. Chuck Hossfeld, running behind Emerling, also got around him and Scherer went from first to third in one corner. It then became a two car breakaway and Emerling’s race to lose. He didn’t, and the Tour point leader picked up the win, his fifth of the year. Hossfeld was second, followed by Scherer, Mike Leaty and Jimmy Zacharias. Leaty, Hossfeld and Bryan Sherwood won the three heat races.

To say Tim Gullo has his #71 Super Stock hooked up is a bit of an understatement. He and Tony Jilson won the two heat races and made up the front row for the start of the 25-lap feature. Gullo took off and began to pull away from Jilson, and Scott Adams. Adams lost fourth when Mike Nichols chased him down and got around him. The first of three cautions came when Chad Lane spun coming off turn two. When the race resumed Nick Robinson got around Adams and was up to fourth when Nichols slowed to a stop in turn four. After a short yellow Gullo resumed his mission, with eight laps remaining. One final caution came when Robinson tapped second place runner Jilson and both restarted at the rear. That moved Steve Shultz and Adams up to second and third. Over the final few laps Gullo was perfect and got his second consecutive win. Shultz finished second but with sparks flying. A brake failure sent him hard into the turn one foam where his #25 sustained some damage. He was ok. Adams finished third, ahead of Jilson and Robinson.

The 20-lap INEX Legends race was one everyone wanted to win but no one wanted to lead. Heat winner Pat Judson led early but on a lap four restart Beth Scherer had the ride of her lifetime. Contact with David French coming off turn two resulted in a barrel roll but she landed on all four tires and was ok. Gary Ham shared the front row with Judson for the restart but it was aborted when Abe Romanik stopped. During the caution leader Judson pitted and was done with a mechanical issue. Ham inherited the lead but got caught up in a tussle with heat winner Alexandria Smith who hit the end of pit road head on. Both pitted, and the lead then went to Chuck Lohmeyer. All this with just four laps complete. Kevin Youngs joined Lohmeyer in row one and the pair engaged in a great battle for the lead, swapping the top spot on several occasions. Lohmeyer went on to score the racing hat trick with his third win of the year. Youngs, Matt Evans, Smith and French all finished in the top five.

In Bandolero action Seth Zacharias and Joey Bernatavitz started from row one and Zacharias led the way. Griffin Montfort spun and brought out the first caution. Zacharias and Bryce Bailey made up the front row for the restart. Zacharias held the top spot but it was the other Zaharias, Seth’s cousin Garrett, who made a nice pass that took him from third to first. Garrett had to survive two restarts, each time with Bailey alongside in the front row. The pair, now known as ‘Smokey and the Bandit’, shared victory lane once again. Zacharias, representing the Outlaw age group, was the overall winner while Bailey, a Bandit, took home another trophy for highest in class. Bernatavitz, S. Zacharias and Shea Bailey rounded out the top five.

This week it’s back to Friday night racing for a regular show of Sunoco Modifieds, Super Stocks, 4 Cylinders, INEX Legends and the Bandoleros. Pits open at 4 PM, grandstand gates open at 5:30 and practice begins at 6. First race starts at 7 PM. Admission is $13 for adults, $11 for seniors 65+, $5 for kids 6-12, and free for kids 5 and under.
