The 2016 season is quickly drawing to a close at Bowman Gray Stadium, and time is running out for the rivals to make a dash for the championships.
Tim Brown of Tobaccoville continues to do the best he can, grabbing the checkered in Friday’s Racing Electronics 100 for the Brad’s Golf Cars Modified Series – his second straight victory. Brown started in
10th on Friday, battling his way forward during the first half of the race to a position where he could challenge for the lead.
Points leader Burt Myers of Walnut Cove had drawn second as his start and had captured the race lead within 10 laps. Brown moved up to challenge Myers on a double-file restart on the third caution,
pinching Myers down on a slick inside row to steal the top spot. A few laps later, rain began to fall – awarding the checkered flag to Brown.
The victory gives Brown the maximum amount of points. Unfortunately for Brown, his two recent wins were met with two second-place finishes by Burt Myers, keeping the points damage to a minimum.
Myers is no stranger to second place this season: He’s finished second in seven out of 14 races in 2016. Although every racer – Myers included – wants to win, the consistent second-place performances
have brought Myers to a strong points lead. He now leads Brown by 69 points.
Jason Myers of Walnut Cove maintains his third place ranking in the points standings, while Lee Jeffreys of Wallburg finished 10th to drop from second on the points ladder down to fourth.
In the Yates Grading & Paving Sportsman Series, Saturday’s wild 100-lapper saw the points contenders put to the test. Zack Clifton of Walkertown started eighth and was soon pressuring the race leaders.
During the first caution, Clifton went to the outside to move to the head of the pack.
Clifton then fell back to third after Michael Tilley of Winston-Salem and John Holleman of Winston-Salem passed by. Then with just a few laps to go in the 100-lapper, Clifton got tangled up in a collision
with Billy Gregg of Lexington. The 81 car of Clifton ricocheted into the guard rail, relegating him to a 10th place finish.
Tommy Neal of Walkertown managed to stay out of trouble, extending his points lead over Clifton to 36 points. Kevin Neal of Walkertown maintains his third place ranking.
Brian Wall of Winston-Salem finished third in Saturday’s 20-lapper for the Q104.1 New Country Street Stock Series. Wall gains six points on leader Derrick Rice of Kernersville, putting a gap of only 16
points in between them now.
Friday’s rainstorm led to the cancellation of the racing for the McDowell Heating & Air Stadium Stock Series. A.J. Sanders of Mocksville is in the lead, just a slim four points ahead of Billy Cameron, Jr. of
Salisbury.
The battles for the crowns continue this Saturday. It will be Whelen Engineering $2 Ladies’ Night, where women are admitted for only two dollars to see Modified twin 50s and racing for all other divisions.
Gates open at 6:00 for practice, and the first race begins at 8:00 PM. Ticket prices, directions, and more information can be found online at www.bowmangrayracing.com or by calling (336) 723-1819.
