He may refer to himself as a semi-retired racer, but Chris Fleming of Mount Airy showed on Saturday night that he still knows how to get it done at Bowman Gray Stadium.
Fleming was the third-fastest qualifier for the Brad’s Golf Cars Modified Series on Saturday, with Brandon Ward of Winston-Salem and Jason Myers of Walnut Cove being slightly faster. But when the top six
competitors redrew for starting position, Fleming was the fortunate one to pluck the pole for his start. “I was lucky enough tonight – everything went in my favor,” said Fleming.
When the green flag dropped, Fleming powered out to the lead and never looked back. He fought off four outside-row challenges from Jason Myers, but Fleming said there was never a point where he was sweating
it.
“I was just riding - the car is just so fast,” said Fleming. “All you’ve got to do is get it pointed down the straight away. It does all the work for you.”
Fleming was quick to attribute the victory to the support and dedication of car owner William Smith. “The car’s just unreal,” said Fleming. “It makes me look like Superman, but I’m the same old Chris Fleming that
used to run eighth and tenth.”
The “Madhouse Scramble” had Ronnie Clifton of Walkertown starting on the pole for the second race with Pffaftown’s Randy Butner on the outside front row. Butner motored into the lead at the beginning of the race
and put on a driving clinic as he held off Clifton and Stadium legend Junior Miller of Danbury.
Disaster struck for Miller as he passed lapped traffic and collided, sending him to the pits. But Miller’s bad luck was good luck for Jonathan Brown of Winston-Salem, moving Brown up to second and allowing him to
challenge Butner from the outside during the restart.
Brown came within inches of overtaking Butner but couldn’t make the pass stick. The victory-hungry driver then tried a different strategy: giving a few stiff shots to the rear bumper of Butner. With just two laps to
go, Brown finally moved Butner out of the groove enough to allow the 27 car of Jonathan Brown to slip inside and grab the win.
“Obviously I had to run Randy as hard as I could because he’s got a good car,” said Brown. “His stuff is just that good, and Randy’s a good, smart driver. He knew if he held that bottom there was no way I could get
by. So I kept having to work it.”
“Finally, I had the bumper to him getting in and washed him up where I knew I could make my move,” said Brown. “I drove him as cleanly as I could drive him but as hard as I could drive him because I knew he
would drive me the same way.”
The victory was a welcome relief to Brown, who hadn’t claimed the checkered in over four years. Butner finished in second, with Brandon Ward taking third.
The Yates Grading & Paving Sportsman Series had one of the wildest nights in memory, with hard collisions setting the tone for the night’s racing. Robbie Brewer of Winston-Salem and Zack Clifton of Walkertown
traded the lead back and forth. But as Clifton fought with Dylan Ward of Winston-Salem for position, a hard-hitting chain reaction was set off that caught six cars in a massive pileup.
Robbie Brewer went on to claim the checkered for the first race, with John Holleman of Winston-Salem coming in second.
Zack Clifton’s crew went to work repairing their car and amazingly got it into racing shape by the start of the second race. Clifton tangled with John Holleman in another fight for the race lead, but Clifton was ahead
when the checkered flag fell – leading to an emotionally charged Victory Lane for the racer who went from a wreck in the first race to the win in the second race. “All I can say is that you can take one away from me, but
you can’t take them all. I don’t care how hard you try,” said Clifton.
Steven Berrier of Germanton held off Brian Wall of Winston-Salem to win the 20-lapper for the Q104.1 New Country Street Stock Series.
And in the McDowell Heating & Air Stadium Stock Series, Wesley Thompson of Advance and Tim Evans of Clemmons each claimed a win.
