Some of the greatest names in Wall Stadium Speedway stock car racing history will be honored this Saturday evening (August 20) as the legendary third mile high banked paved oval speedway celebrates “Champions Night.” The evening will feature an autograph session with several past Modified champions, a “Parade of Champions” using beautiful cars from the Corvette Express car club and six main events for five divisions of stock cars. The regularly scheduled main events will use the “cone race” format. Grandstand seating will open at 5:00 p.m. and qualifying is set for 5:30 p.m. Main event action will follow around 7:00 p.m.

Among the invited past Modified champions expected to participate in the autograph session will be Jimmy Blewett, Chas Okerson, Steven Reed, Tony Siscone, Dave Michel, Mike Carpenter, Gil Hearne, Bob Rossell and Anthony Sesely. The autograph session is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. in the grandstand midway.

On the famous third mile high-banked paved oval the Downs Ford Modifieds will share the spotlight in a 40-lap “cone race” main event. Defending champion Steven Reed of Jackson will lead the way with expected competition coming from multi-time champ Chas Okerson of Freehold, Andrew Krause of Holmdel, Jimmy Blewett of Howell, Ron Frees of Brick, Eric Mauriello of Howell, Brick’s Shawna Ingraham and Jason Hearne of New Egypt just to name a few.

The Snap On Sportsman cars will also be featured in a 50-lap feature race that was rain postponed from earlier in the season. Top point earners Ricky Collins of Willow Grove, Pa., Shanon Mongeau of Manchester, Dom Fattarusso of Brick, Kevin Davison of Howell, Blewett and Jackson’s Blake Barney are among those expected to see action.

The Surf Side Collision 4 Cylinder Stocks will compete in two “cone race” 25-lappers while the Elite Maintenance Limited Late Models and the Green Flag Driving Experience Legend Cars will also see action in 25-lap “cone race” feature races.

In a “cone race” a traffic cone is placed on the backstretch at the one-to-go sign for a restart. Any driver can choose to go inside the cone or outside the cone. If the first four drivers choose the inside, for example, the fifth place driver can choose outside and move up to the front row. Does a driver take the preferred inside groove and restart further back on the inside, or does he or she choose the shorter line of cars on the outside and hope he or she can make it stick? That’s the issue each driver will face on each restart.

Saturday’s schedule will see the competitor pit area open at 1:00 p.m. Regular practice will start at 3:00 p.m., while spectator seating will open at 5:00 p.m. Qualifying is set for 5:30 p.m. with main events to follow.

The revised speedway schedule, made necessary by several rainouts this season, is available at wallspeedwayracing.com.
