It all comes down to Saturday night at Bowman Gray Stadium.
The entire 2016 season has built up to this point: one final night of racing where all the champions are crowned. Double the normal number of points are on the line, too, so the tension will be at the boiling
point.
It’s not a surprise to Stadium fans that the Brad’s Golf Cars Modified Series points battle once again comes down to a rivalry between Burt Myers of Walnut Cove and Tim Brown of Tobaccoville. The two titans
seem to always be close to the front whether they’re battling for the checkered flag or the Modified crown.
At this point last season, Brown had a lead on Myers – and he ended up taking the title. Now, Myers is the one leading the way.
But it’s hard to say that Tim Brown has had anything but an amazing season. He’s grabbed more wins than anyone else. He’s earned more poles. He’s turned the fastest lap of the season so far and has led
almost twice as many laps as any other driver. But he’s had a few run-ins with bad luck, and that’s all that it took to derail him from the drive for the championship.
Myers, on the other hand, hasn’t had a flashy season – but he has had a consistent one. The worst finish he’s had all year was only eighth. He’s taken the checkered twice – perhaps a disappointing number for
Myers. However, he’s finished second an amazing seven times.
Myers now leads Brown by 71 points. With double points on the line in Saturday’s Carolina Farm Credit 150, Brown would have to finish 18 positions ahead of Myers to steal away the crown.
And in case horrible luck were to afflict both Myers and Brown, Jason Myers of Walnut Cove and Lee Jeffreys of Wallburg are just a few points behind and would be more than ready to pounce.
In the Yates Grading & Paving Sportsman Series, veteran Tommy Neal of Walkertown is on the hunt for the championship. He’s been close many times but has yet to clinch the title. Years ago, Neal may have
been known for his aggression and hard-driving style. But now, Neal says time has mellowed him somewhat. With the 2016 Sportsman season being characterized by wrecks, rivalries, and dented fenders, Neal has
steered clear of it all. And although he’s only taken one victory, it was the one that counted the most – the Sportsman 100 on a double points night.
Close on the heels of Neal is last year’s defending champion, Zack Clifton of Walkertown. Clifton has had his share of high moments in 2016 but has also struggled with some low points. He’s tied with Michael
Adams of Yadkinville for the most wins so far, and he took the 2016 Sportsman Hard Charger Award. But wrecks and mishaps have also taken their toll on his points total.
Clifton is currently 29 points behind Neal, needing to finish eight positions ahead of Neal to walk away with the Sportsman championship. John Holleman of Winston-Salem sits third on the points ladder, 23
points under Clifton.
Derrick Rice of Kernersville has a slim lead over Brian Wall of Winston-Salem in the Q104.1 New Country Street Stock Series. Wall is only a mere eight points behind Rice, needing to finish just two positions
ahead of Rice to be the champion.
And in the McDowell Heating & Air Stadium Stock Series, A.J. Sanders of Mocksville leads Billy Cameron, Jr. of Salisbury by 12 points. If Cameron were to finish four positions ahead of Sanders, he would claim
his first Stadium Stock title.
The action breaks loose this Saturday night with the Carolina Farm Credit 150 for the Modifieds and one final race for the Sportsman, Street Stock, and Stadium Stock Divisions.
Gates open at 6:00 for practice, and the first race begins at 8:00 PM. Ticket prices, directions, and more information can be found online at www.bowmangrayracing.com or by calling (336) 723-1819.
