Auto racing veteran Ron Frees fought off all contenders Saturday Night to win the 40-lap main event for the Downs Ford Modified stock cars at Wall Stadium Speedway. The win, which was up for grabs until the final lap, was the second of the year for the Brick resident.
Due to the tough fortunes he suffered in recent weeks Frees started from the front row and took full advantage of that starting spot. Several competitors also took full advantage of a handful of restarts and the “cone race” format to throw everything possible at Frees.
Shaun Carrig of Little Falls was the first to challenge Frees before Jackson’s Jason Treat took his shots. Defending champion Steve Reed of Jackson then stepped up to challenge Frees for the lead before Zack Alspach of Willingboro took several shots at the leader.
Frees’ final challenger was Matawan’s Anthony Sesely who took his stabs at the leader before finally settling for second. Freehold’s Chas Okerson, Carrig and Howell’s Eric Mauriello wrapped up the top five. Reed left the race on lap nine after spinning with an apparent broken rear suspension part.
“This car was really fast tonight,” Frees said after the race. “We got our motor back after having some work done and it is fast! I have to thank Yaccarino Motorsports for the opportunity and Billy Cole for all his work.”
Howell’s Jimmy Blewett won the companion 50-lapper for the Snap On Sportsman cars after battling with early leader Tyler Truex for Mayetta for several laps. Truex crossed the finish line in second spot with Howell’s Kevin Davison, Brick’s Dom Fattaruso and Shanon Mongeau of Manchester completing the top five.
Howell’s Robert French won the 25-lapper for the Green Flag Driving Experience Legend Cars turning around a trouble filled season for the defending champion. Ron Merlino of Pine Beach was the runner-up with Vinny Troia of Browns Mills, Brad Lomaster and Louie Keraitis finishing third trough fifth.
The Surfside Collision 4 Cylinder Stocks raced in a pair of 25-lappers with Jackson’s Kyle Scisco taking his second win in as many starts. Beachwood’s Todd Pilla, Brick’s Jason Lane, Brian Osborn of Howell and Bryan Barbalacci wrapped up the top five. Brick’s Ronnie Mullen won the second 4 Cylinder Stock 25 lap main event over Osborn, Pilla, Scisco and Fred Cannock of Port Monmouth.
Freehold’s Howie Conk won the 25-lap feature for the Elite Maintenance Limited Late Models over Brian Doyle, Bill Vanderveen, Mike Tillett and Glen Conk.
Stock car racing continues this Saturday night (August 27) as the speedway presents the “Woody’s Roadside Tavern 105” for the Modifieds which offers $5,000 to the winner. The Limited Late Models will compete in two 25-lappers, the O’Shea’s Auto Repair Factory Stocks will battle in a 25-lapper and the Three Quarter Midgets will compete on the “inner oval.” The Garden State Vintage Stock Car Club will also be on hand. Grandstand seating opens at 5:00 p.m., qualifying starts at 5:45 p.m. and feature racing begins at 7:00 p.m.
The complete updated regular season schedule, which runs on Saturday nights through the end of September, is available at wallspeedwayracing.com as are the rules and regulations for all divisions. Post-season events, the “Spooky Spectacular” in October and the Thanksgiving weekend “Turkey Derby,” are also being planned.
