This past Saturday, Monadnock Speedway offered a full variety of racing as the New England Antique Racers and the New England Race Truck Series along with all the weekly divisions put on hot racing action for the fans.
In the visiting racing series, Darragh Hoyt took down the victory for the New England Antique Racers and Bert Ouellette won the 35 Lapper in the New England Race Truck Series.
The first of the speedway’s weekly divisions, the Young Guns, came rolling onto the track as Alex Barden brought the field to the green. By lap two, there was a new leader of Devin Guy making the pass early for the number one spot. Barden followed with the Curtis brothers of Chase and Jaret on his back bumper. Barden tried his best to hold off Jaret Curtis for second but unsuccessfully lost the second spot within a few laps leaving him to contend with Shelby Avery for fourth. The leaders carefully worked their way through lap traffic as Barden and Avery ran fourth and fifth. At the checkers, it was Guy picking up the win followed by Jaret Curtis, Chase Curtis, Barden and Guy.
Tim Paquette and Eric Silvernale set the pace on the front row for the Lightning Stocks feature event. It did not take long for the fans to see a new leader as Mike Stebbins took his race machine to the front on lap three as Paquette had to contend with Tim Leblanc and Ricky Whipple glued to his back bumper. Stebbins widened his lead as the battle for second and third was fought between Leblanc, Whipple, points leader Pat Houle and Matt Gauffin who ran nose to tail. Houle finally made his move on lap nine on the high side of Leblanc for second. On the next lap, Leblanc lost ground slipping back to the sixth position which left the third spot to Whipple. All eyes were on the battle for second as both Whipple and Gauffin tried to find a way around Houle who was heavily smoking off every corner he took. Whipple edged a tire inside of Houle but was denied and lost a little ground and found himself defending third from Gauffin. On the final lap, Gauffin gave it one last try for third coming off turn four but not enough as Stebbins took the checkered flag followed by Houle, Whipple, Gauffin and Paquette.
The Mini Stocks came out next as Mike McGoldrick Jr and Kevin McKnight led the pack to the green. McKnight quickly took the lead on lap one with Matt Kimball taking over second on the next one. Solomon Brow was on a mission as he was in third making a pass on Eric Pomasko early on from his fifth starting spot. The top four ran close as Kimball took his car a little too high in turn two which gave Brow and Pomasko the opportunity to take over second and third. McKnight started to feel the heat as Brow was on his back bumper. On lap eleven, Brow muscled his way into the lead which left McKnight to hold off Pomasko. Pomasko tried the inside of McKnight out of turn four with slight contact, McKnight held on. Kimball saw the battle up ahead of him as he began to reel Pomasko in for third. Two laps to go, Solomon was on cruise control as Pomasko took over second out of turn four. At the end, it was Brow followed by Pomasko, McKnight, Kimball and great run by McGoldrick for fifth.
Richard Vincent and Dan Comeau set the pace for the Thunder Stocks. On lap one, Vincent took the lead as Craig Chaffee took over second followed by James Nowakowski. Outside polesitter Dan Comeau dropped back to fourth and found himself the first caution of the race when he came down on Paul Barnard and turned himself around. On the restart, Vincent held of Chaffee as Nowakowski took a look under Chaffee for second. Vincent developed a good lead as Nowakowski took over second, Paul Smith and Paul Barnard dueled each other for fourth. On lap six, the caution flew again as Comeau made contact with Jason Kozacka. Vincent who held a good lead did not want to see the caution as he had to defend the number one spot from points leader Nowakowski. On the restart, Nowakowski took the lead as Vincent tucked behind him. Smith and Barnard continued the battle for fourth. Smith to the inside of Barnard took over fourth and began to pressure Chaffee for third. As laps winded down, Nowakowski took advantage of a three car battle behind and began to pull away from the field. Chaffee, all over the back bumper of Vincent put the pressure on as Chaffee made a cross over move to take over second. Chaffee put his race machine in turbo charge and began to chase down the leader Nowakowski. On lap twenty, Chaffee attempted to make his move out of turn four but the car unsettled caused him to lose ground as Vincent, Smith, Barnard and Kozacka ran bumper to bumper behind him. At the checkers, it was Nowakowski followed by Chaffee, Vincent, Smith and Barnard.
The Super Stocks came onto the track as Nancy Muni and Tyler Lescord brought the field to the green. Lescord took over the lead on lap one which left Muni in a battle for second with Tyler Leary, Cole Littlewood and Joel Monahan. Leary charged himself into second as Monahan put the pressure on Muni for third. On lap five, Monahan, a little too anxious, made contact with Muni in turn four resulting in the first and only caution of the feature event. On the restart, Lescord and Leary ran wheel to wheel as Leary driving hard took over the lead. Littlewood ran third but not for long as Dennis Stange took advantage of a Littlewood bobble out of two that caused him to back off the gas. At the half way point, Hagar found a whole underneath Littlewood and took over the fourth as Monahan followed for fifth. Leary, running on rails, developed a good lead followed by Lescord and Stange. Two laps to go, fans watched Hagar and Monahan duke it out for fourth. Monahan continued to try to make the pass but was shut out by Hagar. At the completion, it was Leary celebrating the victory followed by Stange, Lescord, Hagar and Monahan setting up a fierce battle for the championship.
The Sportsman Modifieds came rumbling onto the track for the evening’s final feature event with Ben Byrne and Eric Leclair side by side for the green. Byrne quickly took the lead as Kim Rivet and Geoff Rollins followed in the top three. Kimball wasted no time to get to the front as he took over third in a wheel to wheel showdown with Rollins. By lap ten, Byrne had a good lead from the rest of the field as Keith Carzello gave a few taps on Tyler Jarvenpaa’s bumper for sixth. Kimball remained in second as the third through sixth place competitors of Rivet, Rollins, Jarvenpaa and Carzello all ran nose to tail. On lap twenty-three Carzello took over fifth from Jarvenpaa on the backstretch. A few laps later, Carzello made an inside move out of turn four on Rollins for fourth as Jarvenpaa followed. Two laps to go, Carzello chased down Rivet for third and attempted to make a move out of turn two, both made contact and brought out a caution to set the field up for a green white checker finish. Byrne, hungry for his first career win, had to hold off former champion and point leader Kimball for the victory. On the restart, Byrne controlled the lead but knew one bobble would lose the race. The top four of Byrne, Kimball, Jarvenpaa and Rollins ran tight which set up an exciting finish. On the last lap and final turn, Kimball took the inside of Byrne but Byrne held on to just edge out Kimball for the win followed by Jarvenpaa, Rollins and Cameron Sontag.
