Nichols, Bainbridge & Nye win U.S. Open features
Chuck Hossfeld of Ransomville, N.Y. won the 75-lap Sunoco Sportsman feature on Saturday night at Lancaster National Speedway to kick off the 28th annual U.S. Open weekend. Hossfeld inherited the lead on lap 39 and led the final 36 laps to get the win.
In other action on Saturday at Lancaster, Mike Nichols of Elmira, N.Y. won the 30-lap Super Stock feature. Kevin Baindbridge of Buffalo won the 25-lap Roaming Buffalo 4-Cylinder feature for his eighth win of the year. Andy Nye of Lancaster, N.Y. won the 25-lap NYPA TQ Midget feature.
A total of 40 Sunoco Sportsman attempted to qualify for the main event. A total of 28 cars were locked in following six qualifying heats and two consolation races.
Matt Durar and 2016 Sunoco Sportsman track champion Jake Lyon led the field to the opening green flag. Lyon moved out into the early lead followed Druar, Sherri Hogan and Shawn Nye. Tommy Catalano quickly worked his forward from the fifth starting position, and he took over second place on lap 8.
Druar spun out in turn two while racing George Skora III for third place on lap 12 to bring out the third caution of the race. On the ensuing restart, Catalano got by Lyon to take over first place.
Hossfeld started 11th and he methodically picked off the cars in front of him as he moved through the field. He made it to third place by lap 23 and was running behind Catalano and Lyon when the yellow flew again for another incident involving Druar. This time Druar hit the wall in turn one. He was uninjured, but the car was done for the evening.
When racing resumed Hossfeld had the best seat in the house as Catalano and Lyon battled side-by-side for the lead for about 15 laps right in front of him. The drama, however, was ended prematurely as the yellow flag ended the longest green flag run of the race on lap 39 for an incident involving Amy Catalano, Owen Bednasz and Moose Rutherford.
On the ensuing restart, Catalano and Lyon made contact going into turn one, which sent Lyon spinning into the grass. Catalano was penalized for the contact and sent to the rear of the field. This put Hossfeld in the lead followed by Skora, Neal Dietz, Jr., Scott Wylie and Shawn Nye.
Hossfeld led throughout the second half of the feature, but he faced stiff competition from Skora, who made several attempts to wrestle the lead away. Skora’s night came to an end, however, on lap 66 when a suspension failure sent him to the pits.
Veteran John Barber had the last shot at Hossfeld, but once again the former Modified track champion held strong. Hossfeld picked up his first career Sportsman win at Lancaster. The victory was also his sixth career feature win at the U.S. Open as Hossfeld has also won the Modified feature five times. He is one of four drivers with six U.S. Open victories. Kirk Rutherford, Andy Jankowiak and Jeremy Haudricourt are the other three.
Barber finished second after starting 18th and not having the best handling car early in the race. Tommy Catalano rebounded from his penalty to finish third. Scott Wylie and Shawn Nye rounded out the top five. Mark Pennell finished sixth after starting 19th. Jankowiak, Bobby Holmes, Lyon and Rick Kluth completed the top ten.

Krawczyk was sent to the pits for the incident while Wylie suffered a broken rear end that took him out of competition.
Nichols came from the sixth starting spot to pass Krawczyk for the lead on lap 16, but Wylie got by him for first place just two laps later. After Wylie and Krawczyk tangled, Nichols only needed to lead the final five laps to score the win.
For the second time in his career, Nichols won the Super Stock feature at the Race of Champions at Oswego Speedway and Lancaster’s U.S. Open in the same season. Bill Frisbie, Jr. finished second with Robert Fink, Mike Montgomery and Eric Hadley completing the top five. Had ley started last in the 28-car field.
2016 track champion Kevin Bainbridge used a thrilling three-wide pass to win the Roaming Buffalo 4-Cylinder feature. Bainbridge went between race leader Tim Durfy and a lapped car going into turn three on lap 9 to take the lead for good. He then held off Jamie Woods in the closing laps to earn his eighth victory of 2016.
Andy Nye led all 25 laps of the NYPA TQ Midgets after starting third. Nye did a masterful job holding off Bobby Holmes in the closing laps to secure the win. Holmes settled for second with Dave Wollaber, Kyle Hutchinson and Tommy Catalano rounding out the top five.
Lancaster National Speedway closes out the 2016 on Sunday, September 25 with the final day of the 28th annual U.S. Open. The Race of Champions Modified Series will headline the show with a 125-lap feature. The Advance Auto Parts Street Stocks and X-Press Signs Late Model will also be in action.
