Under new management, and with its first full season of racing in the books, Evergreen Raceway held its first annual awards ceremony Saturday evening at Genetti’s Ball Room in Hazleton, PA. Each of the divisional champions was honored for their accomplishments and many others received recognition for their efforts during the 2016 season.

Matt Hirschman of Northampton, PA took the stage to accept his Tour Type Modified championship awards. He thanked speedway promoter Jason Makarewicz for bringing life back to Evergreen, which was the speedway that Hirschman began his career.

Paul Hartwig, Jr. won his first ever track championship in the Evergreen modified divisions and Nick Ross claimed the Late Model title in his rookie year.

Ricky Yetter dominated the Dirt Modified division to score his second straight track championship and Charlie Castiglione won the Street Stock championship in a car that he purchased from his Evergreen idol, Steve Clark.

After competing for more than twenty seasons, Tom Casagrande claimed his first career title in the Factory Stock division and Bob Azarowicz accepted the championship trophy for becoming the Four Cylinder champion.

CJ Lehman won the Pro Stock championship, as did Brandon Oltra in the INEX Legends division. Gage Michael also received hardware for winning the INEX Bandolero crown.

Sponsored by BRE Racing Tire, several “Rookie of the Year” awards were presented to Blake Barney (Tour Type Modified), Damon Frutchey (Evergreen Modified), Nick Ross (Late Model), Scott Adams (Street Stock), Justin Morgan (Factory Stock) and Brayden Spencer (Four Cylinder). TJ Kapish and Keith St. Claire received championship trophies for being the highest finishing Enduro drivers in the Factory Stock and Four Cylinder divisions.

Several special awards were presented, one of which went to Larry Danko, who spends countless hours at the track doing maintenance and upkeep. Danko received a standing ovation when he was recognized.

Speedway announcer, Ted Grow received a special “Spirit Award” for all of his hard work at the speedway and dedication to the sport that he loves.

Makarewicz received a plaque from track officials and drivers, thanking him for taking a chance and reopening Evergreen Raceway.

Along with Makarewicz, speedway co-promoter, Gene Ostrowski and Competition Director, Jeff Owler thanked all of the drivers for their support this season. They acknowledged that mistakes were made during the first season of operating the track and promised that improvements would be noticeable in 2017.

Music was provided by Richie Green Entertainment.
