Chemung Speedrome is now 0-2 on the season and hopeful that reversing those numbers will work for the much-awaited season opener on May 20. The 3rd Annual Gary Marshall Memorial for the Super Stocks will be contested. This 40-lap event is part of the RoC Super Stock Series and will have lots of extra money and awards for the competitors. The race card also includes the Sunoco Modifieds, 4 Cylinders, INEX Legends and Bowen Racecars Bandoleros.
The Gary Marshall Memorial pays the winner $1,000, courtesy of Buckley’s Discount Tire & Brake. Bonus money and special awards are there for virtually every competitor. Lap sponsorships go to random drivers, and the top five finishers will leave with beautiful trophies. Kids will love this event as well, with over a dozen bicycles to be given away thanks to generous donors.
In the inaugural running of the Gary Marshall Memorial it was an emotional Tim Gullo who took home the trophy. Marshall was Tim’s cousin, and having the extended Marshall, Gullo and Potrzebowski families in victory lane was most memorable for all of them. Last year’s race was memorable for a very different reason. Mike Nichols celebrated in victory lane but his disqualification two hours later changed everything. Charlie Sharpsteen, strong all day and second at the checkers, was awarded the big win. A strong field of cars is anticipated for this big race.
Pits will open one hour earlier (3 PM) than they will in subsequent weeks to accommodate race teams for opening day. The grandstand gate will open at 5 PM and practice will get underway at 5 as well. The first green flag will fly at 6 PM. Admission this week is $15 for adults, $13 for seniors, $5 for kids ages 5 to 12, and free to the little ones under age 5. While the Speedrome reverts to its familiar Saturday night race date this season, the race time is now one hour earlier so fans should plan accordingly for the 6 PM start.
