Jimmy Blewett was the first to admit that he thought a third straight Freehold Ford Modified win at Wall Stadium Speedway Saturday night was out of the question. His afternoon started with engine issues that forced him to turn to a back-up car. During qualifying his run was ruined by a blown out tire. Blewett started the 40-lap main event deep in the field in 11th spot.

When the green flag waved Shaun Carrig of Little Falls fought off Manchester’s Shanon Mongeau through the first quarter of the race as Blewett and a host of others struggled to get to the front. Mongeau slipped to the inside lane on lap 11 to take over the top spot with Derek Hopkinson of Toms River racing into second.

A flat tire soon slowed Hopkinson’s run and Andrew Krause of Holmdel took up the chase. Krause’s run then stalled just past halfway when motor issues ended his night. At that point Blewett completed his run to second spot and tracked down Mongeau. Blewett then caught and passed Mongeau on the inside lane with eight laps to go for what would be his 60th career win and third straight in as many tries. He is now fourth on the speedway’s all-time win list.

“Once we had all our troubles early I thought that the best this could be was a good points night,” Blewett said after the win. “But the guys and the sponsors would so hard so that we can run fast and this back-up car was good tonight. I guess we also got a little lucky because a couple guys in front of me had trouble tonight. Still, you have to have a good team to take advantage of that luck.”

Tyler Truex of Mayetta raced to his first win of the year in the companion 25-lapper for the Snap On Sportsman cars. Truex led most of the way until Howell’s Rob Silver slipped into the lead on a restart. When another caution bunched the field several cars touched bumpers on the ensuing restart with Silver spinning from the top spot as a result. That moved Truex to the lead and on for the win followed by Howell’s Eric Lane, Mike Tidaback of Brick, Jonathan Laureigh of Lanoka Harbor and Kenny Green of Farmingdale.

Union’s Joey Helberg won his second straight 25-lapper for the O’Shea’s Auto Repair Factory Stocks after racing trough the pack to take the lead with five laps remaining. Bayville’s Elliott Wohl, Howell’s Richie Byrne, Joe Mongeau of Brick and Manchester’s Scott Riggleman were second through fifth.

Defending champion Mike Tillett of Bayville won the 25-lapper for the Elite Maintenance Limited Late Models. Cole Ormsbee of Wall, Toms River’s Bill Vanderveen, Dominic Casola of Colts Neck and James Moorman wrapped up the top five.

Dan Beckett won the Mechanics’ Race and Norman Lane won the Demolition Derby.

Each race winner received trophies from John Gasko and Son Farm and Greenhouses.

Racing continues this Saturday evening (May 27). Grandstand seating will open at 5:00 p.m. Qualifying will then start at 5:45 p.m. before main events begin at 7:00 p.m.

The Freehold Ford Modifieds are set for a 40-lap main event and the Sportsman cars are set for a 25-lapper. Both the Surfside Collision 4 Cylinder Stocks and the Green Flag Driving Experience Legend Cars are scheduled for twin 25 lap main events.
