After two weeks off due to wet weather the high banks of Monadnock Speedway were under sunny skies. Race fans were treated to the speedway’s regular NASCAR Whelen All-American Series division with one small twist; twin 25 lap feature’s for the Sportsman Modified division. Tyler Jarvenpaa captured his first win of the season in the first Sportsman Modified feature. The second modified feature saw Rookie of the Year contender Matt Kimball take down his first career victory in Sportsman Modified competition in only his 3rd start in a Sportsman Modified at Monadnock Speedway. The night also saw Tyler Leary, Ethan Marsh, Greg Millette and Richard Vincent taking down their first victories of the season.
The first division on the track for their feature event was the Young Gun division for their 10 lap feature event. For the second event in a row Cale Skillings would lead them to the green, and at the drop of the green he would take off in the lead as Sammy Silva and Christopher Phelps gave chase. Silva would fall off the pace as it appeared the 28 machine was struggling to stay in gear. Skillings would lead every circuit on his way to earning back to back wins. Phelps would cross the line second followed by Silva in third.
On the track next would be the Sportsman Modified’s for the first of two 25 lap features. Tyler Jarvenpaa in the 22 and Kim Rivet in the 99 would lead the field to the green, but before a lap could be completed Rivet’s number 99 machine spun out of turn 4 causing the field to check up. Unfortunately drivers were unable to check up quick enough and stacking up half the field. This accident saw the 44 machine of Brain Chappin come to rest on the back of the 13x of Cameron Sontag; while last week’s winner Ben Byrne would find himself needing the assistance of wrecker to leave the track. This accident would bring out the caution and quickly there after the red flag. A decision was made to have the sportsman modified’s head to the pits to give time for teams to make repairs as more teams than were mentioned were impacted by this accident and to bring them out after the Mini Stocks.
After the Sportsman Modified’s exited the track the Lightening stocks rolled onto the track for their 20 lap feature event. The 13K of Leon Keniston would lead the Lightening stocks to the green flag. Keniston would jump out to an early lead but would feel the pressure from the 4 of Eric Silvernale and the 88 of Hillary Renaud, who is missing her college graduation to race tonight. Silvernale would take the lead from Keniston on lap 2 before surrendering the lead himself on lap 3 to Renaud in the 88. Renaud wouldn’t have time to settle in to the top spot as she would quickly feel pressure from Greg Millette in the 07. Millette would get by Renaud just before the halfway point and wouldn’t look back as he rolled to victory. Renaud would find herself finishing in 2nd as she was chased across the line by the 61 of Steve Fucile in the 3rd spot. Millette expressed his appreciation to Junior for helping him get here today, as the rest of his crew had previous engagements.
The Mini Stocks would find themselves on the track next. For the second week in a row Ethan Marsh in the 97 would lead the field to the green. Marsh would jump out to an early lead as the 23 of Devin Guy would supply the early pressure before a caution would fly for the 43 of Alexander Pearl making contact with the front stretch wall, which would cause the 57x of Pat Houle and the 33 of Jaret Curtis to connect and spin into the infield. The 43 of Pearl would be forced to go pit side to replace a flat tire but would be able to continue. On the restart Marsh would hold onto the top spot as he would cruise to his first victory in the Mini Stock division. Desmond Skillings in the number 90 would finish 2nd and Devin Guy would finish 3rd. When asked how it felt getting his first career Mini Stock victory Marsh summed it up with one word “Amazing.”
The Sportsman Modified’s would return to the track for try number 2 of the first 25 lap feature. All car’s would be able to return and since no lap had been completed it was determined that it would be a fresh start with everyone getting their spots back. So Tyler Jarvenpaa and Kim Rivet would lead the field of 21 Sportsman Modified’s to the green. Jarvenpaa would put his number 22 machine in the lead and would never look back on his way to victory lane, but if he had the last two laps his mirror would have been filled with the 02 of Geoff Rollins who would have to settle for 2nd in the end. Ben Byrne would find himself in the third spot after his crew worked feverishly to replace the right front suspension that was ripped off in the first try of feature number 1. Byrne would go on to thank his crew for their hard work.
Next out on track were the Super Stocks for their 25 lap feature event. The 12 car of Cole Littlewood would start on the pole and would set the pace early as he would find himself out front. But he wouldn’t be alone as the 11x of Tyler Leary and the 33 of Solomon Brow would be right in tow. Leary would put his #11x car on the inside of Littlewood on lap 6 and take the lead on lap7. Leary would never surrender the lead on his way to his first win of the season. The 03 of Shawn Monahan would take over the 2nd place on lap 16 and would try to track down Leary. Monahan would be helped by a caution on lap 24 which forced a green, white, checker finish but Monahan just wasn’t able to make a run for the lead and would settle for a 2nd place finish. Solomon Brow would bring his #33 across the line in the 3rd place. After the race Leary was “just happy to get the monkey off our back and get that first win of the season.”
The Thunder Stocks would thunder onto the track next for their 20 lap feature. Richard Vincent in the number 4 car would lead the field to the green and would jump out to an early commanding lead, but by the halfway point James Nowakowski had tracked him down and was able to start providing some pressure. In the end it was Vincent that would lead every lap and collect his first victory of the season. Nowakowski would finish 2nd; with Craig Chaffee finishing 3rd. After suffering damage in the season opener Vincent was extremely happy with his finish and is hopefully to make this a habit.
Sportsman Modified’s would take to the high banks for feature #2 to end the night. Rookie Matt Kimball would start on the front row with Kim Rivet. At the drop of the green Kimball would dart to the lead. Only to be slowed by the first yellow of the race as the 74 of Victoria Bergenty would spin with help from the 6 of Ben Byrne. Byrne would find himself at the rear of the field on the restart. On the restart the field wouldn’t complete another lap before another caution would fly after the 99 of Rivet and the 22 of Jarvenpaa made contact which caused Rivet to spin collecting the 5c of Cole Littlewood and the 45 of Paul Smith. Jarvenpaa would find himself sent to the rear of the field for his involvement. A couple of late lap cautions set up opportunities for the 8 of Keith Carzello but his car just wasn’t handling well enough to take advantage of these situations. Carzello would have to settle for a 2nd place finish. Geoff Rollins would battle his way thru the field to finish 3rd. After the race I was able to catch up with Rollins to talk about his 2 podium finishes on the night. Rollins stated that he was pleased with how things went but he did add “we are just missing something” and hopes to be able to figure it out before next week! Tyler Jarvenpaa was happy to take down his first victory of the year but was a little disappointed with his 5th place finish in the 2nd feature. When asked why he was disappointed with his finish Jarvenpaa had this to say “that’s not how I want to race. Really sorry to Kim (Rivet driver of the number 99) and the other cars that got tore up in that incident. That contact definitely affected the handling.” Tyler hopes to put this behind him and get back to racing the way he wants to race next week. It was difficult to get a chance to speak to Matt Kimball after his first career Sportsman Modified victory but I was able to ask him if he expected that he would be able to win this soon. He stated “I knew I had a fast car, but I figured maybe top 5 not a win.”
