It was one of those nights at Chemung Speedrome – yellow fever, outcome-changing late race cautions, and some first-time winners. Victory lane celebrations were had by Connor Sellars (Sunoco Modifieds), Jacob Gustafson (4 Cylinders), Kevin Youngs (INEX Legends), and Seth Zacharias (Bowen Racecars Bandoleros). The finish in the Super Stock feature is unofficial, but Jim Lamoreaux parked in victory lane. Racing action resumes this Saturday night starting at 6.
The best medicine for a disappointing opening night result is to come back strong and spank the competition. That was the playbook, executed to perfection by Connor Sellars in Sunoco Modified action.
TJ Potrzebowski, Tony Hanbury and Sellars won the three heat races while the four-car invert put Jimmy Zacharias and Sellars on the front row for the 40-lap feature start. Zacharias led early with Hanbury, Sellars and Potrzebowski behind him.
Things were single file on a 19-lap green-flag run before the first caution came out. While lapping Chris Clemens, Jesse Kent and TJ Zacharias got together in turn three but they could continue. J. Zacharias had Hanbury lined up beside him for the restart. Officials were about to throw the yellow on the back stretch when Zacharias turned Hanbury. They restarted at the rear while Sellars and Potrzebowski were lined up in front for the restart.
Potrzebowski, last week’s feature winner, led lap 20 but from lap 21 on this race belonged to Sellars. Once in front he built on his lead with each lap. What Sellars didn’t want to see was a caution flag. On that he didn’t get his wish, as Cody Jackson and Paul Johnson got together in turn four to bring out just the second, and final, caution period.
That last restart was a good one for Sellars, whose #00 was hooked up and handling well. He took the double checkers and celebrated atop his Buzzie Reutimann lookalike. Potrzebowski finished second, with Kent, TJ Zacharias and Hanbury making up the top five. “I didn’t want to see that last caution but the car was strong and I found my line around here and this Morgantini engine gave me the power I needed,” Sellars told the crowd.
Yellow fever, confusion and uncertainty were the key words in the 25-lap Super Stock feature, whose outcome was not finalized until the wee hours of the morning. The race got underway ok, with Terry Potrzebowski leading Frank Chapman and Mike Nichols. The first 19 laps were run caution-free and then things went downhill quickly. That first of six cautions, with just six laps remaining, came when Jim House and John Lane got together. The restart was called back when a piece of sheet metal was dropped in turn two. A lap later Jordan Mathews spun on the backstretch, setting up another Potrzebowski/Nichols row one restart. Potrzebowski prevailed, leading Nichols, Nick Robinson and Jim Lamoreaux. As the field was about to take the white flag Ed Kelley and Chad Lane went hard into the turn one foam blocks. Both were ok but the cars were heavily damaged. The green/white/checkered finish was harmless enough for the green and white portions of it. However, on the final lap Nichols dove underneath Potrzebowski. He made contact and the pair rode into the backstretch wall and others spun or stopped because of it. The race ended with that yellow and checkered. In reverting back to the last scored lap, it was the fourth-place car of Jim Lamoreaux who ended up parked in victory lane. The confusion forced officials to review several videos, as several drivers were making claims that did not pan out. Lamoreaux is a former Chemung track champion who took a year off before building the new Super Stock. RJ Zacharias, Chapman, Tim Gullo and Jason Duke finished in the top five. Chapman and Nichols won the two qualifying races.
Jacob Gustafson has made his long haul from the Rochester area well worth it, and he has a pair of trophies to show for it. The Four Cylinder division ran a 20-lap feature that was slowed by three cautions. The first of those three came on the opening lap when Ben Perry and Monica Green spun in turn three. Andy Speer and Gustafson made up the front row for the restart. Gustafson led but he would have to hold on through two more caution periods. He would also have to fend off Zack Bennett, whose RWD car was closing. Tyler Harbst brought out the yellow when he spun off turn four just as the field got the ‘2 to go’ indication. When it was over Gustafson exited the car, minus a shoe, and said “that was a whole lot more fun than last week.” Bennett finished second, followed by Greg Moldt, Kevin May and Perry. The top three – Gustafson, Bennett and Moldt – also won the three heat races.
It was a good night for the Youngs brothers in INEX Legends action and all three nearly ended up in the top five in their 20-lap feature. Kyle Youngs led early with Teddy Bowen and Kevin Youngs hot on his tail. Daniel Carter, running fourth at the time, spun with five laps in and brought out the first caution. When the race resumed, Kyle and Kevin made up row one. Kevin held his race lead but the next caution came out a lap later. Brian Schoch spun on the back stretch and then five cars were either caught up in, or stopped for and considered part of, a wreck between turns three and four. Kevin Youngs passed his brother on the restart and he was the new leader at lap six. Over the remaining 14 laps Kevin pulled away and left Kyle engaged with Gary Ham and Bowen for positions two through four. When it was over Kevin Youngs had his first win this year. He was followed across the stripe by brother Kyle, Ham, Bowen and Pat Judson. For Kevin Youngs the night was a sweep as he and Bowen won their heats.
It’s always exciting to see a first-time winner, and when Seth Zacharias climbed out of his Bandolero and waved the checkered flag that was his moment. The 10-lap race was sloppy and caution-riddled, and it all began with a bad initial start. Zacharias led early then lost the lead to his cousin, Garrett Zacharias, on the third lap. A scary wreck occurred when Jeffrey Noe and Griffin Montfort both went into the inside retaining wall just short of turn one. On the restart Garrett Zacharias lost a wheel in turn four, bringing Evan Rygielski to the top spot, a position he held until a late-race spin. Dominick Wood was then the leaders but G. Zacharias was on the charge. When going for the lead he contacted Wood, and Seth Zacharias was in the right place to go around and win the race. “It was crazy out there,” Seth said from victory lane. Everyone in attendance would agree with that one.
This Saturday night (June 3rd) the Sunoco Modifieds will run twin 20-lap features. Also on tap are the Super Stocks, 4 Cylinders, INEX Legends and the Bowen Racecars Bandoleros. Pits open at 4 PM, grandstand gates open and practice gets underway at 5. First race starts at 6 PM. Admission is $13 for adults, $11 for seniors 65+, $5 for kids 6-12, and free for kids 5 and under.

· Connor Sellars, Jim Lamoreaux and Jacob Gustafson won free wings from Buffalo Wild Wings in Horseheads, NY in their ‘Winner Winner Chicken Dinner’ bonus program.
· Each race night a number will be drawn for field inversion. Handicapping will only apply to the heat races after three races.
· Jacob Gustafson exited his winning 4 Cylinder car with one of his shoes in his hand. He jokingly referred to it as his ‘hot shoe’ but his driving style could earn him that nickname.
· The Bowen Racecar Bandoleros are now running together and all have a mandatory restrictor plate.
