“Double Points” – undoubtedly the two words that will quicken the pulse of competitors like nothing else at Bowman Gray Stadium.
The points challengers are given an opportunity to make up serious ground in the battle for the championship. But those on top have the added pressure to perform and maintain their dominance. And with the dust settling on Saturday’s Double Points Night, the
winners and losers are becoming clear.
Tim Brown of Tobaccoville racked up another strong night to add to his streak in the Brad’s Golf Cars Modified Series. He took the pole for the fourth week in a row, and grabbed a victory for the third week in a row.
Yet despite his win tally, Brown was involved in a wreck during the second race on May 13 – right after he had just won in the first race. As his car was carried off to the pits that night, his points total took a beating as well.
Meanwhile, points leader Burt Myers of Walnut Cove continued to remain consistently strong. As good as Brown was performing, Myers was right behind him.
Brown has made it his mission to use every advantage that he could and undo the points damage done by his collision with the guard rail. After the incident, he trailed Myers by a total of 18 points.
Now, after Saturday’s Double Points Night, Brown’s victory helped him continue to whittle away at the points gap. While Myers still maintains the points lead, Brown reduces the margin down to only eight points.
But fate was not so kind to the points challenger in the Texas Steak & Tap House Sportsman Series.
John Holleman of Winston-Salem had been locked in a tie for the points lead with Derek Stoltz of Walkertown for the first few weeks of the 2017 racing season. Nearly two weeks ago, that deadlock was broken when Holleman slipped down to second in the points under
Stoltz. But Holleman was far from out of the race – he was a mere one point behind Stoltz.
During Saturday’s Sportsman 100, Holleman moved up to challenge Tommy Neal for the lead on a double-file restart. The move could have placed Holleman in the race lead, led to a win, and given him the points lead.
Instead, he collided as he battled for position. He headed off to the pits, ending his race early. Holleman’s 14th place finish drops him back to fourth in the standings.
With Holleman falling away, Stoltz now has a strong points lead. Taylor Branch of Lewisville moves up to second in the points in Holleman’s absence.
Amber Lynn of Walkertown won yet again in the Q104.1 New Country Street Stock Series. The 18-year-old female rookie followed up her first ever victory a week earlier with another win on Saturday. The performance strengthens her points lead.
In the Law Offices of John Barrow Stadium Stock Series, Chase Hunt of Lexington brought home the win. Hunt adds to his points lead, but second-ranked Chris Allison of Mocksville finishes second – keeping the damage to a minimum.
Be sure to be at the Madhouse this Saturday night for family friendly entertainment at budget friendly prices. It’s Two Dollar Ladies’ Night presented by the Triad’s 105.7 Man Up – where all women are admitted for only two dollars to see a Modified 100-lapper and
racing for the Sportsman, Street Stock, and Stadium Stock Series.
Gates open at 6:00 for practice, and the first race begins at 8:00 PM – this Saturday night. Ticket prices, directions, and more information can be found online at www.bowmangrayracing.com or by calling (336) 723-1819.
