Saturday’s 100-lap Modified race put the competitors to the test at Bowman Gray Stadium. But with a combination of luck, strategy, and quick reactions, Burt Myers of Walnut Cove left with the victory trophy.
The 100-lap races for the Brad’s Golf Cars Modified Series have their starting lineups determined by random draw – making them nail-biters for the teams and the fans alike. Danny Bohn of Huntersville qualified on the pole and elected to take on the Fans’ Challenge
and start in the rear.
Myers chose to not accept the Challenge and instead drew sixth for his starting position. Randy Butner of Pfafftown drew the pole and shot out into an early lead ahead of Zach Brewer of Winston-Salem. When the first caution brought out a double-file restart, Chris
Fleming of Mount Airy moved up to the outside to battle with Butner for the lead.
Butner managed to fend off Fleming for two restarts, holding his own against the stout bumps from Fleming. On the third restart, however, Fleming was able to move past Butner to take over the lead. Butner was not one to sit idly by, though. He gave a few shots to
the rear bumper of Fleming and attempted to challenge from the outside – but Fleming held on.
Meanwhile, Burt Myers had been trying to make his way through the field, hoping to choose the inside or outside lane correctly during the double-file restarts. “I got in a couple bad lines there to start with, and I was wondering if we were going the wrong way,” said
Myers. “Knowing when to go, when not to go, which lane to go in - about halfway through there, we were going backward.”
But soon enough Myers made his way up to third. When Butner made his final unsuccessful attempt at passing on the outside row, Myers shut the door and moved up into second. Myers’s plan was now to hope for a double-file restart to move past Fleming and take
the lead.
“I was putting pressure on him and trying to make him make a mistake. But the way the track is right now, it’s hard to time it. You don’t know when that man is going to slip or when you’re going to slip,” said Myers. “There are so many variables this time of year
because it’s so hot. Everyone’s sliding around.”
The first restart belonged to Fleming, who powered ahead and maintained his spot. But on the next restart, Myers got the edge and moved into the lead.
“The restart before, he beat me - and I learned something from him,” said Myers about racing with Fleming. “So on the next restart I tried to time it a little bit differently and get a better run. I was able to put a little bit more brake where I needed it to get the car aimed
just right getting in - and I was able to set the car enough to get a run off the corner.”
Fleming’s car seemed stout, though, and he delivered powerful shots to Myers’s bumper. “There was dirt everywhere,” said Myers. “I tried to just go in there and tie it down, so I would be able to get a run without turning sideways.”
Myers held on to take the victory, with Fleming coming in second.
“I’m the first loser, but we had a good car,” said Fleming. “We just need to do a little tweaking. Burt was better than me, but I think we put on a good show than the fans.”
Danny Bohn was unable to get back up to fourth in order to complete the Fans’ Challenge. The $3,000 prize pool rolls over to the next 100-lapper for a combined $6,000 then.
In the Texas Steak & Tap House Sportsman Series, Taylor Branch of Lewisville had an emotional roller coaster ride on Saturday. He drew the pole for the first race and held on for most of the race despite the heavy pressure from behind from Zack Clifton of
Walkertown. But on lap 19, Clifton bumped Taylor and sent him spinning.
Noah Triplett of Lexington took advantage of the situation to grab the lead, while Zack Clifton stayed close on his bumper in second. Branch was enraged and showed his displeasure toward Clifton during the caution, but Clifton was able to avoid any involvement.
On the restart, Clifton was able to overtake Triplett to grab the lead and the win on the last lap. Triplett finished behind him in second.
Luck smiled upon Branch, though. The “Madhouse Scramble” has him starting third for the second Sportsman race. Branch fought with Joseph “Bobo” Brown of Winston-Salem and moved ahead to lead the pack. Then Branch went on to win. It was an emotional
victory for the man who dedicated the win to his mother battling cancer.
Jacob Creed slipped by Amber Lynn on the outside to win in the Q104.1 New Country Street Stock Series.
And in the Law Offices of John Barrow Stadium Stock Series, Wesley Thompson of Advance and Chase Hunt of Lexington each claimed victory in a 15-lapper.
