Flye And Schenk Also Crowned

”It feels good to get one here at my home track,” stated an elated Tommy Catalano in victory lane. He did not win the season finale. Mike Leaty won the NASCAR Sunoco Modified 35-lapper, but Catalano earned enough track points to win his first modified title at Spencer Speedway. He now joins his mother Amy and uncle Buck as NASCAR Sunoco Modified champions at Spencer.

Also picking up a track championship was Paul Flye in the Grandpa Dog 4-Cylinders. Flye left no suspense in the point race. He was the point leader coming into the night and he won the 15-lap feature going away.

In the Super Sixes, Brandon Allen won the 20-lap main event, but Barrett Schenk’s close second place finish locked him into his second straight title in that division. He was the only defending champion to repeat.

The 35-lap Sunoco Modified main event saw pole sitter Nick Morich take the early lead with Mike Leaty in hot pursuit. Leaty was able to get past Morich on lap six. Before another lap could be completed the yellow flew when Kevin Timmerman and Daryl Lewis Jr., running seventh and eighth, spun off the track between turns three and four. Both drivers were able to return to the race.

Leaty was quick to stay in the lead on the restart leaving Morich in second. On lap ten, Morich was hit from behind and spun in the second turn, bringing out the yellow again. Eddie Hawkins now found himself in second followed by Tommy Catalano and Connor Sellars.

The yellow flag would remain “holstered” for the rest of the race. Leaty, with a very fast race car, was able to pull away from his competition leaving Hawkins and Catalano to fight for the runner up position.

Kevin Timmerman had now reworked his way back up to sixth and was challenging for fifth when a lapped car forced him to fall back in line. At the finish it was Leaty followed by Hawkins, Catalano, Sellars and Amy Catalano.

Leaty stated,” We finished off the year in a strong way. Between all of the rain and a blown motor this year, the points might have come out differently.”

The 15-lap Grandpa Dog 4-cylinder feature saw Travis Montgomery take the early lead. But Paul Flye seemed on a mission, passing Montgomery with an outside move to take the lead on lap three. Flye would never look back, finally pulling out an advantage on Montgomery in the closing laps.

“I want to thank the Heimes family for sponsoring this division this year,” added Flye in victory lane.

The race would run green-to-checkers, with Flye taking the win, followed by Jacob Gustafson, A.J. Montgomery and Dalton Alexander to make up the top five.

The Super Sixes saw Alison Knoepfler, leader of the first lap, give way to her teammate, Brian Hallett on lap two. Hallett was not able to out run Brandon Allen who seemed to consistently remain second. That is until lap five, when he passed Hallett and took the lead. Barrett Schenk followed Allen through the hole he created to take second. The top three cars then began to pull away from the field.

At the finish line it would be Allen followed by Schenk, Hallett, Ashley Schoonmaker and Knoepfler. This race also was able to be run green-to-checkers.
