The anticipated season finale wasn’t to be due to a very rainy forecast for Sunday afternoon. Race fans were denied the opportunity of watching the New York Super Stocks, GRIT Dirt Sportsman, and INEX divisions to cap off the 2017 season. There is no rain date.
With the three NASCAR track championships having been settled the prior week (Jimmy Zacharias, Sunoco Modifieds), Nick Robinson (Super Stocks), and Jacob Gustafson (4 Cylinders), the formality of declaring the INEX champions was all that was left for the regular divisions. Their insurmountable leads resulted in track titles for Kevin Youngs (Legends), Garrett Zacharias (Bowen Racecars Bandoleros- Outlaws) and Evan Rygielski (Bowen Racecars – Bandits). Close point chases behind the champions will remain as they were going into the rained-out finale.
Kevin Youngs put together an amazing season with seven feature wins, including three in a row in the early part of the season and two in a row to end the year. Youngs never finished outside the top 10 in the 13 races and had 12 top-5’s. This is his first Chemung title.
Garrett Zacharias successfully defended his 2016 Bandolero Outlaw title with seven overall wins plus another three as the top among the Outlaws. Add to that nine heat wins and the young driver had a fabulous season. Evan Rygielski was the best of the Bandits with two overall wins and another as the highest in the Bandit group. This is his first Chemung title.
The next order of business is rewarding all five track champions, as well as others who finished in the top ten in each division at the banquet. Due to favorable reviews from last year, the track will again celebrate at Tioga Downs Casino. Festivities will be held on Saturday, November 4th, with more details to come later.
