Fred Harbach would have been 68 today (please correct me if I'm wrong on the age), Happy Birthday in Heaven, Fred. Anyone have any good, fun, Flying Dutchman stories, post them. This guy was truly a character and a great racecar driver, we miss you Freddy.

Fred was a true gentleman, class person and a great race car driver.

The fact that he retired as a champion was very fitting for Fred.

Flyin' or Flying, don't matter much. :D The fact is, he flew around that old "bull ring" at the Head as fast as anyone and was a GREAT Champion!
Another one of the greats that my Dad ALWAYS spoke fondly of.
Happy Birthday up there and thanks for lettin' me sit in your car when I was a wee lad.

 The autographed cards I have in my album list Fred's birthday as 10-18-36. I still have a Christmas card he sent me in '92, and a personal letter he had written me in '93. That '92 title chase, with him and Brian Miller going down to the last lap of the last race, legendary. What a friendly guy, too. Happy birthday.

Hey Jones, how about Fred making it a point for you to get the very first matchbox "X90" car from the carton? Remember how he brought you into the trailer telling you, "I have a surprise for you; you get the very first one"? A true classy guy, both on & off the track. :)

Sorry Rabbid, I've seen it on his cars as "flyin' " and "flying". It was a good thing for you to point out in a post like this though.

Think you're right about Islip. Don't think the flagman's stand was ever that low at Riverhead. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong? :applause:

What memorys. If my memory serves me correctly, still a little dizzy from hitting that wall at Riverhead so often, lol, that's definitely Islip. I've got to dig up some pictures I've got of my dad.

Yeah, that's Islip. Wayne never ran that blue car regularly anywhere else, except may New Egypt. Besides, I'd recognize Ray Morturano's shoes anywhere, LOL!!!
So sorry, but I have too. WJ, if that is the month of May, the "m" should be a capital, OR, it may need to have a "be" attached, OR, maybe something totally different??? LOL... And yeah, I know, you do this purposely to play with us!!!

what was it with the "X" on some of the cars i remember like the X3, x90, x89? was it a class thing or just that there were 3 #'s like Winters 380? and someone that wanted a 2 # car number had to put a x before the 2 #'s?? then again why were there X after some cars like the 8X? just wondering i probably will remember once someone refreshes my ???? memory

Before electric/electronic scoreboards, I think the car identfying/numbering was more open to creativity. Cars that had names rather than numbers were a thing I remember from early on. The "Ace of Spades", the "Ten pins", and the "Flying A" and like that. 3 wide picture vault has pictures of those cars. The "X" thing, sounds exotic so perhaps that's part of it. There are poster's on this board who are just a little older than I who may remember a better explanation.

As far as letters being used, NASCAR actually issued letters for scoring purposes in the National Championship point standings. In 1970, we didn't request the number 9A! NASCAR issued the number to us because there was already a number 9 registered in New York. Of course, you all know who the number 9 was.......don't you? Shame on you if you don't!... LOL!

Speaking of the number 9, I remember Frank Cromwell's 9 team, with Geroge Wagner in the 9, and Teddy Wesnofski in the 9X. That would be a perfect example of what I said above.
Alright already WJ, 'Geroge' ???? You play with our wits WAY too much!!! LOL

Some of you guys are really bringing back some fond memories. Freddie really was a gentleman. I used to work across the street from his shop part time at my buddy's station/shop. Freddie always had his door open with a big Welcome whenever I'd drop by. Spent a number of Saturday nights after the races in his pit area over the years. Anyone know whatever became of his son Alan? Or his brother Ted?

Yes it is ISLIP, and that was the car wayne drove to the 200 lap victory. His other blue car for New Egypt was the old Billy Auer car. Then again, we had like 7 cars in the garage at that point in time. The car in the shot with Freddie then became the red colored escort bodied mod that Axel drove for a few times in the final 2 seasons at Islip. :)

If you looking for some other old pics of the Flyin' Dutchman and others I recommend La Sheefs and a rather finicky one (it's hosted on Geocities)called Pop's racing site which features the William E. Stock collection which covers lots of early pictures from Islip and Freeport.

Is that taken the day of the 200 at Islip in August of 82?. If so, it's a pretty Ironic picture.
