I thought it would be fun to post pictures of some of our favorite cars from the past. It doesn't matter what division (it would be nice to keep it as local as possible), just post them and have some fun! I will start it off with a Fred Harbach pic and a John Blewett, Jr. pic

the picture of the fire at Riverhead involved Tom Baldwin and Bobby Lane. I remember it well as I was sitting in turn 1 where it happened. Baldwins car burned right up to the firewall in back of the motor but he had it all back together to race the following week.

The legend as i remember is that both Bobby Lane and Baldwin raced the next NIGHT at Islip. I also remember the story that Baldwin lifted Freddie Harbachs car out of the flames with his bare hands so Harbachs car would survive. I was there that night, but I was young, so my recollections may be off a little.

Nice job keeping this thread going.I told you it would be fun.

ah, Craig Meyer.
I remember when they had a claiming rule at Riverhead in the early 80's. I seem to remember Craig having his motor claimed and not giving it up to the guy. The track told him never to bring that car back again. So the next week he painted the car a different color, put a different number on it and went racing. The good old days :)

wayne
12-16-2005, 11:35 AM
If I'm Not Mistaken, The Story Goes..... My Father Was Racing The #43, And The Turbush's And John Ambrose Put Up The Money To Claim The Motor. He Wouldn't Give It Up, Went Home, Painted The Car, And Put The Old #88 On It, And Went Racing The Following Week. And Then I Believe, Feola Sr. Came Back The Next Week And Tried To Claim The Turbush's Car. Dynamite Dan Might Remember The Story Better. I Was Pretty Young At The Time, So There probobly More To The Story Than I Remember..

Wheel Racing
12-16-2005, 05:38 PM
Neal Sr. actually liked the paint on the #43 so much that he introduced himself to Craig that day, and told him he had an idea for the following week. My father then brought both of his cars to Riverhead the next week, John Saraceno (Joe's brother) drove the second car. He posted the $1600 ($800 per car) to claim both Rusty's AND Danny's cars (pretty sure the claimer was entire car, not just motor back then), but Bob O'Rourke put a quick end to the claimer rule that day. Back then, it was Islip guys versus Riverhead guys and the rivalry was intense. I remember everybody from Islip hating the Riverhead guys because they would show up at Islip and beat our guys easily. This was a chance for my father to get even them. I was just a kid, but man, that was exciting to be a part of. The re-painted #88 actually looked great, but my father was heartbroken about the Petty 43 being covered. Pretty funny how friendships begin. My father would probably tell you now that the Turbush family, collectively, is the best group of friends he now has at the track and some of nicest people he has ever met. Damn Wayne, now I have to find pictures of those cars to post. What a great memory! It sure was fun back then
I think I have the story pretty close to accurate, but I would love to hear any other versions or add ons that anybody may have.

No as the Tommy Baldwin version of the story goes, he was leading and Charlie caught him and passed him. In victory lane Tommy went over to Charlie to congratulate him. Charlie was not happy at all, he said he let TB run the car that night so HE could win. CJ thought Tommy waited for him and let him pass. Tommy said, no one could've stopped Charlie that night he was just flying. TB had that picture right over the desk in the office at the shop it was his favorite.

I will try to figure that out today. I will try to break it down by division(Fig 8,Ladies Division,Charger/Novice,BB) It has been a lot though.I just found some pics of the 7 Ladies Division cars he owned as well as the WBAB Novice car. I will try to get those up by tomorrow. It has actually been a nice trip down memory lane going through his collection. My father has been involved in Long Island racing for a long time and it feels good for others to now realize that. I have a ton of respect for my father, for his dedication to this sport, and hope he someday gets recognized for that. Here is a pic of Neal Sr holding off Jim Malone Jr and Rusty Turbush for a Novice feature win at Islip and picture of my Aunt Lurene's Ladies Division championship car. So far it is my father's only championship as a car owner or driver, so far!

Rich Vlacci

RGeeProductions
01-02-2006, 10:15 AM
Yes it is Rich Vlacci. These pictures were our 2nd and 3rd charger car. The first year we ran Blunderbust using Fred Rogers car, finishing 2nd to Mark Tooker in our 1st season racing. I very much remember that season as Mark was famous for using his inside tires below the white line that year and really tee'd me off that officials NEVER did anything about it. The second year we moved to Charger and Rich bought Peggy Smith's last Chevelle, which was a well built car but a lead sled by today's and then's standards. The 2nd Charger, the 1st pictured above, was actually built in R&K Precision Automotive's shop, Rich's business, by Frank Curtis who worked for Rich at the time. It was a pretty much a straight up car. The 3rd Charger, the 2nd pic, was built by John Matlach, which we couldn't afford an aftermarket body, which was allowed that year, was deamed too low, even though it was bone stock, and wouldn't be able to run the following year and the track imposed the height rule. This car was ran 1 more year with an aftermarket body then sold to the #77, Skip. Rich then tried his hand with Pro Stock's at Thompson with limited success. That car was also sold when Rich had an accident with his son and a racing kart which broke both his bones in his lower arm. He hasn't had the desire to return but now back into street racing cars. Rich is still around and still owns R&K Precision Automotive on Sound Ave in Riverhead. And Tim, I agree, Rich had a great, cool attitude in his racing style.

This is was my favorite car then, is my favorite car now, and will always be my favorite car. There are a whole lot of memories and mixed emotions captured in this one pic for me, especially after I saw the Gentleman Jim article. :*-( :(

The second picture was a surprise  I found tucked in between the picture and the picture frame. It is for a kid, so I must have been younger than 12 years old when I got it.

Also as for the fire, the car Bobby had was an ex-Fred car. Fred had that nice padding done in the interior and part of that, the seat, and steering got burned. And I have a ton of photos just so far no way to scan them. I plan on bringing them to the old timers day.

I can't believe I took this long to look at this thread. Oh man....

Wheelman, I raced against that yellow #89. Wait, let me rephrase that. I drove around while he raced. Any pictures of Figure 8 cars, the 39, the 77 and the 310?

What memories. Keep'em coming.

Axel Anderson and Georgie TetThis picture is actually Wayne Anderson with his fathers '37 Ford sedan. I would say that the picture was taken in 1965, probably on the night Wayne drove in his first modified event in this car. I remember that he finished 7th in his heat and 12th in the feature that night. This car has always been one of my all time favorite modifieds. In another post, the one with Benny Giaraputo when he won the first ever World's Championship Figure Eight, that is certainly Chris Economaki in the photo with Benny. Go to post 48 in this thread to see the Anderson picture.

Is there any info of where any of these cars are, and if any of them can ever hit the track again? I happen to like how the old charger cars looked before they went to after market bodies. The early 90's pictures bring back a lot of memories, because that's when I first started going to the track.

The thing I love about all the great pictures posted are the race cars are hand painted and lettered with battle scars, as far as the street stocks ????? It's great to how tight they were, surprised the LF'S are not smoking, lololo. I was not a regular at any of the Long Island tracks, but some of the cars brought back some cool memories from my visit's, great, great pictures...... I thought I'd send this one from my home track the Danbury Racearena

I used to have a pic of Marsh's car...not a track pic, but a pic I took in the pits when he was parked next to Mistretta. I'd have to dig through the box of stuff I brought home from college with me that I never unpacked after I got home (unfortunately, the chances of that happening any time soon are pretty slim, as right now I don't even know where to look for the box).

Yes it did. If I remember correctly (something that seems to be happening less and less these days....) that engine came from a car that was originally driven by Chris Youngs brother (Gary perhaps). I have lots more coming. I gotta have 200 to 300 I'd say. I also have from the race of champions at pocono 86 or 87 and a cup race at Dover 89/90 I think.

Artie I've been trying to remember what I was doing when Ernies car was white and can't remember, lol. 1977 I started and had the 56 ford. Ernie had the corvair. 1978 I spent the summer clipping, changing the cage and the body over to the mustang on my car so I didn't run much. I drove Al Tyrells 011 one week and a car Freddy Dunlop gave me to run the last part of the season I had number 02 on. Ernie still had the corvair. That was the year he was running New Egypt on Wednesdays and the week before 4th of July he hit the point of the wall at the pit exit there hard enough to push the water pump into no1 cylinder. He had to run Bill Howards car at Islip that week. It's the same week I drove the 011. 79, 80, and 81 I ran my car with the mustang body on it. I know I took the photos but I can't remember if he changed over to the vega in 79 or 80. At most the vega was white for 2 years and possibly only 1. It was red when he had the crash in 82 wasn't it? The winter of 81/82 George Brown and I cut off the rear clip on my car and ran new rails under the rear. With everything I had going on then it wasn't ready for 82 so I ran Johnny Krafts chevelle, the old Dave Louden car, the first 3 weeks of 82. Ernies crash was the 2nd week.

RickFigure8

Anyone ever seen a rod do this? This was out of my 223 cu in ford motor. U-joint came apart and worked it's way apart at the rear right in the middle of the straightaway and god knows how much rpm got up to. The piece of crank still spun in the rod too.

Ray Theiss, Danny Avondet, The third photo is kinda special to me. I took this in 1965 at Freeport, which means I was 13 years old, with a brownie camera. This was the initial start of the race and right around the start finish line the front row lost it and everyone else in the race followed suit. Somehow I got this just as everyone was pointed in a different direction and the starter had changed to a red flag. The 4th photo is Ernie in a new car he built with a newer 67 or so falcon body. If I remember right he didn't like how the car felt and Roger was running the old car with the 62 or so falcon body, and he swapped and went back to the old car and let Roger run this one.

Ken Resnick
08-28-2007, 12:42 AM
Hello, my name is Ken Resnick,

I was Ray Theiss' partner for almost 12 years on Long Island from Freeport to Islip. We built all the race cars from 1975-1984 in a one car garage in Farmingdale. We built several figure 8's and street stocks (one for Hank Kramer) in the same garage. Ray later became partners with and bought out The Rod Shop on Kean St.

I drove the # 03 , Z28 figure 8 cars we built in the early 80's .I was the owner of the #20 figure 8 that Ray drove and he also drove the #777 center steering Ford Galaxy Bomber at Freeport. The Islip #03 figure 8 was later sold to Johnny Zell (the flying mailman) .
The Race team was named J&R Racing in 1979 thru 1984, in honor of my fathers plumbing & heating company( J & R Installation of Bay Shore).

Our main sponsers were Mid Island Auto Wreckers of Deer Park(thanks Dave and Frankie Morrow), Al Aparo Cesspool Service of Bay Shore, Chets Auto Parts of Deer Park, B&C Automotive of Deer Park, Wren Beverage of West Islip, Amsoil , and my father Joe Resnick for almost all our pipe and tubing.

Our pit crew members were Bobby Valitzky , Joe Resnick , Don Cassese, Artie. Our painter was Mike Knoud and our letterer was Billy Valitzky.
Ray and I were fabricators of our own chasis and suspensions , tin work , body work , roll cages etc. Jack R was of great help with our motors. Remember in those years of Islip , figure 8 cars ran straight six motors , ie , 230 and 250 chevy . Pete Tapit of Tapit Transmissions built most of our transmissions to our specs.

Ray was married to a lovely lady named Donna and in the early 80's he had twin boys named Raymond and Nicholas, with her. I was engaged to and later married my childhood sweetheart ,Millie, who became fataly ill from Ovarian Cancer in 1993. I did leave racing in those years , but have now returned due to a friend ( Steve Morris) .We field and drive a two car team of 4 cyl enduros at Riverhead this year.
Its great to be back behind the wheel again as well as turning those wrenches.

Attached below is a photo of the #03 figure 8 car. I was a young lad of 18 years old in that figure 8 main win. The very proud man kneeling down holding the checkered is my dad , Joe Resnick . The flag was given to us by Ray Morturano (starter in those years of Islip, also very proud and happy for us)

See you at the track .

Does anyone have pictures of the former figure 8 driver Kenny Marsh? He ran in the late 90's. I work with him and he says that he doesn't have many pictures of his car.

Also Al Worth, a modified driver?

And is that picture of the red car on 3 wheels a 1967 Belvedere?

Yep Al Worth, modified driver. It was a black Vega, number 00 (yellow numbers I think).
Lots of figure eight guys "moved up" or tried/wanted to. R.J. Faveau had Racer Jack's last modified when I was helping out over there. A very tech piece for its day. It was a Gremlin bodied machine with a 389 Pontiac engine in it. I only remember it coming to the speedway with us one time.
Joe Biondillilo Sr. had a Mod for a short while too. Silver Vega number 07.
Chris Young and John Fortin both competed in the figure eights before moving up.

And it may not be a 1967 Belvedere, but it is certainly a mid sixties Dodge/Chrysler product. The early Savoy's were pretty popular too. Sturdy cars with easily tweaked suspension and stout drive trains. Or so I heard, as that was a bit before my time.

Art, prior to having that Vega Al Worth had a coupe, also black with yellow #00. Sharp looking car.

Hey Rick...I will never forget driving that #2 Mustang of yours and looping it out of turn 4. The entire field went by me as I faced the wrong way. Then low and behold, T.K. blast me. I looked into the grandstands and who's standing there? You!

Ah yes, the good old days.

Cool pics Neal. Hey, do you have any old Scott Wolf pics, being that your sister was a big fan of mine.

Joe, yes, they sure were great. And very ironic how one of the best at avoiding things was the only one who didn't miss you, lol.

Oh my goodness, that last picture brings back some memories...being 16 and finally old enough to run around the pits. Is that #7 by chance the same car that the young Mr. Lehmann is driving now (CJ, not the old guy...ha ha)?

This is the OLD guy not the same car that was the old Steve Tooker car that was driven by Al Vetter then sold to Gary Peters. Then Steve and Tim Halpin and myself got it.CJ (the young guy) is driving the old Nova.

Thanks for the info, Scott. I couldn't tell from the picture which car that was. Good times, though...

Funny story...around that time, I was helping out Eddie Mistretta. During the off-season, he was selling Christmas trees, and I took a ride to go say hi. We were standing in the parking lot and a Malibu pulled up to the light at the corner, and I remember Eddie commenting that the light was too fast for him to get the driver's number, since he could use a spare body for the Charger car. How many guys nowadays do you think literally get their body panels right off the street?

Mortgage Guy, speaking of old Charger cars, did you ever get your scanner fixed to scan those pics I sent you last year?

J D I don't think it was, it had a 427 ford motor from H and M in the car. They kept the car in Bridghampton. It was sold to Richie S. I was wrong on the year it was about 67 or 68. They put the hump in the rear for a bigger gas tank to run 50 laps or more. I know he set fast time on one.

The picture that I put up there is a small block in the car looks like a 409 in the one you put up. They built a coupe and went into the swamp the first time out, I think? Also, Jim Malone drove it one night to a 50 lap win. It could have been a Langhone race.

Anybody remember this car, I watched it being built one Winter, when I was a kid. It was from East Hampton, Harry Cullum built it, and Teddy Baranoski drove it.

Yes I do, what was the number of car that Don DeCristafaro drove? I think the next car that Teddy drove was the three ring car.
