Suffolk County Announces Public Meeting Schedule for Yaphank Development Review Committee

Hauppauge, New York – Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy today announced the schedule of public meetings to be held by the Yaphank Development Review Committee. The meetings are intended to provide the public with the opportunity to offer input into the creation of a Request for Expressions of Interest (RFEI) for the development of the Yaphank County Center that will be issued at the end of the year. An RFEI is a non-binding solicitation of development ideas that could possibly be considered for some of the County's surplus holdings in Yaphank.

County Executive Levy expressed his vision for the possible development of some of the surplus County-owned property in Yaphank in his State of the County message in January of this year. Rather than following the haphazard development pattern that has plagued past use of the property, he suggested a forward- thinking, planned approach that would include public participation from the beginning.

"We must look for more visionary ways in which to grow our economy and the possibilities for the Yaphank property are endless," Levy said. "Everything will be on the table for consideration, including sporting, entertainment and/or cultural outlets, as well as workforce housing. Will the business community find our Yaphank site attractive? We're going to find out. And we plan on involving the public in this process from the very beginning, which is why these public meetings are so important."

The Yaphank Development Review Committee was created by resolution of the Suffolk County Legislature and with the approval of the County Executive. The Committee includes members from the community as well as from labor and business and town and county agencies. The Committee is charged with providing guidance to the County in the drafting of the RFEI to ensure that it meets the goals and objectives necessary to ensure the proper planning and use of the site.
