Hey all, I bought a gutted (I mean gutted) 87 Dodge Charger. I'm trying to hook up a push-button starter since all of the electronics are gone. Apparently, it's not the same as my old GM street stocks. Anyone have any idea what I need to do? Do I need to add an ignition module or something?
Thanks
Tim

i didn't know a charger was a 4cyl
you should be able to find the wire going to and from the ignition switch and connect them to a push button. Thats how I hook a flip switch up for my escort 4 cyl. should be the same to where instead of turning the key to connect the wires it will be like "hotwiring" a car by connecting them when you push the button.

Yeah, 87 Charger was (poor use of the name). Even more, it's a shelby! I've wired push buttons before, but it's not working in this case. It spins the starter, but that's it. A friend of mine mentioned needing an ignition module?

Spinning the starter means you are only sending power to the starter motor, not the solenoid that engages the drive gears to the fly wheel to turn the engine. Either an ignition module, or a simple relay with a 'collapse at the start circuit' will do it, but get help from someone who knows EXACTLY what they are doing if you want it to work every time.

If someone gutted the wiring harness and the ECU..... your in deep doo-doo......................
The ignition, electric fuel pump and the FI/carb. are controlled by the Electronic Control Unit and its wiring harness, without them you won't get the motor started.......................... :disgusted
If the wiring and the ECU are still in the car its just a matter of finding what wiring was cut/disconnected during the gutting process.............

WOW things have changed greatly!!! When I worked on any of my car starters, the gear engaged from centrifugal force from the starter spinning not from a seperate solenoid that engages the drive gear!!!! Boy, technology today!!!!

I guess I should have been more clear. It spins the motor, not just the starter. Yes, all the electronics are gone. Any suggestions?

Pretty much what "spier racing" said. The worst thing in the world is to chase a wiring harness thats been butchered. Been there....done that. :help: :help:  :disgusted

Starter wire yellow ignition harness

Ignition wire blue ignition harness

These wires should be running up the underside of the steering column, going to the key cylinder. What you need to do is run a 30 amp switch for the ignition (12v in one side of the switch, the other side you hook the blue Ignition wire)

Then take a 30 amp momentary push button for the starter wire. (12v to one side of the button, the yellow starter wire on the other side)

So when you want to start the car, flick the Ignition switch on, then push the button to start. When you want to shut the car off just hit the switch off.

This is if everything else is in place, hope this helps.

Hey Brother, sounds like your gonna be taken' a little trip to the boneyard, hehe.......................
You can hand wire the electric pump with a relay to get some fuel to the engine, but your definitely gonna need the ECU and the proper wiring harnesses to get the fuel injection and the ignition system working............................ :help:
Besides Ty's suggestion, its the only way to get your racecar running, then you'll get outta deep dookie, hehe....................
