Some race tracks have (2) flagmen (an official flagman and an official flagman assistant) in the starter's stand.

The only person that I know of who died at Riverhead while in actual competition was John Watts in a 1970 Modified event. It appears that he had a heart attack after he had been a leader in that feature.
There was an assistant flagman who worked the pit gate between turns 3 & 4. He was an older gentleman. In 1972 during a hot lap session Leo Ceckowski slid up and hit this poor guy who went airborne, rolling along the catch fence and landing in the pits. He lived but, as I recall, he broke both legs and was laid up for a very long time. Leo was devastated about it. For the life of me I can't remember the flagmans name.
i also believe that there was also an incident where an enduro driver had a heart attack while racing.i was in the infield and he came out of 2 and slumped and crashed into several cars before getting wedged between cars in the infield.track crew was great in getting car shut down and if my memory serves me it was chris youngs wife who actually took the lead to save his life.i think i remember the name but dont want to post in case im wrong.he was from lindenhurst.that was some day.i also have pics buried of the helicopter landing in the pit area for lucky the photog who was enduro racing and got flipped over.
